Pakistan Advances Digital Connectivity Amid Growing Telecom Investments

Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari highlighted the importance of digital connectivity in Pakistan during his message on World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, emphasizing the critical role of the telecommunications sector in the country’s development. The sector has attracted substantial investment and generated significant revenue, marking progress towards enhancing digital infrastructure.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, the theme for this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, “Digital Lifelines: Strengthening Resilience in a Connected World,” underscores the essential nature of reliable connectivity in daily life. Connectivity plays a pivotal role in various sectors, including education, healthcare, commerce, banking, and public services, particularly for citizens in remote and underserved areas.

The telecommunications sector in Pakistan made significant strides during the fiscal year 2024-25, with an investment influx of USD 838 million and revenue generation of PKR 1,075 billion. The country boasts over 205 million telecom subscribers and more than 161 million broadband users, supported by an expanding infrastructure that includes fiber optic networks and submarine cable systems.

A notable advancement was the conclusion of Pakistan’s IMT/5G Spectrum Auction in March 2026, which generated USD 509.6 million for the national treasury. This auction expanded spectrum availability, laying the groundwork for the deployment of faster and more reliable next-generation services.

The federal government, in collaboration with provincial authorities, remains dedicated to broadening digital access and improving nationwide connectivity. Initiatives through the Universal Service Fund have extended broadband and voice services to millions in previously unserved regions. Ongoing efforts aim to enhance fiber deployment, encourage investment, and finalize satellite communication regulations for remote areas.

President Zardari acknowledged the contributions of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, cellular operators, and other stakeholders in reinforcing Pakistan’s digital ecosystem, emphasizing the necessity of reliable and affordable connectivity for economic growth and public service accessibility.
