Islamabad: More than two years after Pakistan's General Elections of February 2024, over a third of the election petitions remain unresolved, according to the latest update from the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN). By the end of April 2026, election tribunals across the country have adjudicated 246 out of 374 petitions, leaving 128 still pending.
According to FAFEN, of the total petitions filed against the GE-2024 results, 73 out of 124 related to the National Assembly and 173 out of 250 concerning Provincial Assemblies have been resolved. Under the Elections Act, petitions should be decided within 180 days of filing, a timeline that expired in October 2024, raising concerns over the delayed pace of resolution.
The rate of petition disposal has slowed considerably, with only 75 petitions resolved in the last nine months, compared to 171 by July 2025. The pace has varied significantly across provinces, with Balochistan leading in resolution rates and Sindh lagging behind. None of the petitions from Islamabad have been resolved due to ongoing litigation concerning the transfer of petitions between tribunals.
Meanwhile, 123 tribunal decisions have been challenged in the Supreme Court, which has resolved only 18 appeals, leaving 105 pending. FAFEN also highlighted issues of uneven public access to tribunal proceedings and records, pointing out disparities between provinces in the availability of tribunal documents.
