MNA from Karachi Korangi-III Secures Seat with Only 19% Voter Support

KARACHI: In a recent electoral outcome from the General Elections of 2024, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-234 Karachi Korangi-III was elected with 72,009 votes, representing 41% of the 175,071 ballots cast. This translates to only 19% of the total 385,628 registered voters in the constituency, raising questions about voter representation under Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system.

According to the Free and Fair Election Network's analysis, the voter turnout in the constituency was recorded at 45%. Despite the electoral victory, the MNA did not secure the support of the majority of voters who participated in the election on February 8, 2024. A significant 58% of the voters, numbering 101,108, cast their votes for other candidates. The runner-up in the election garnered 25% of the total votes, while the third-placed candidate secured 10%. The remaining candidates collectively accounted for 22% of the votes, with 1% declared invalid.

This analysis is part of FAFEN's comprehensive examination of electoral representativeness across Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The FPTP system, which requires only the highest vote total rather than a majority for a candidate to win, has resulted in elected members who often do not reflect majority voter support. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate seats based on the proportion of votes received, better aligning legislative representation with voter preferences. The GE-2024 data from Pakistan illustrates this discrepancy between votes cast and the representation ultimately secured in the National Assembly.
