LUMS Hosts International Research School to Enhance Mathematical Sciences

Lahore, The Department of Mathematics at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has been recognized as the Emerging Regional Centre of Excellence (ERCE) by the Commission of Developing Countries of the European Mathematical Sciences, highlighting its pivotal role in advancing mathematics education and research in the region. This accolade underscores LUMS’s contribution to the global mathematical community and its commitment to fostering academic excellence.

According to Lahore University of Management Sciences, the department is leveraging its newly acquired status by hosting the CIMPA Research School on Algebra and Algebraic Geometry for Applications from February 26 to March 8, 2024. The Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées (CIMPA), which seeks to promote mathematical research in developing countries, supports this initiative. The school aims to provide participants with advanced knowledge in algebraic and geometric methods and their applications in various fields.

The event features a roster of esteemed mathematicians from across the globe, including Dr. Thomas Kahle from Germany, Ms. Sara Saeedi Madani from Iran, Dr. Carlos Amendola from Germany, Dr. Aida Maraj from the USA, Dr. Beatriz Pascual Escudero from Spain, and Dr. Miruna-Stefana Sorea from Romania, alongside LUMS’s own Dr. Imran Anwar and Dr. Shaheen Nazir. The diverse faculty reflects the international scope of the program, drawing participants from Iran, Vietnam, Canada, Germany, Spain, and beyond. A notable number of attendees are also participating in the sessions online, further extending the school’s reach.

In collaboration with the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi, the CIMPA School is hosting sessions at both LUMS and IBA venues, facilitating a broader engagement with the mathematical community across Pakistan. This partnership has attracted significant interest from the Karachi and Sindh regions, underscoring the event’s appeal and the high level of anticipation among the academic community.

Dr. Imran Anwar, Associate Professor at LUMS, emphasized the importance of understanding algebra and geometry’s practical applications in today’s data-driven and innovative world. The CIMPA Research School represents a significant opportunity for collaboration and knowledge exchange among mathematicians worldwide, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and cooperation.

The success of the CIMPA School at LUMS signifies a major step forward in the promotion of mathematical research and education, supported by prominent organizations such as CIMPA, ICTP, the International Mathematical Union, the European Mathematical Society, and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. It embodies a commitment to building a global community united in the pursuit of mathematical excellence.
