Gilgit, In a significant development for higher education in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Karakoram International University (KIU) is nearing the completion of its new Engineering and Technology Campus. During a recent visit to the under-construction facilities, the university’s Vice Chancellor, alongside the Director of Works and Senior Most Dean, Prof. Khalil Ahmed, expressed confidence that the campus will mark the beginning of a new era in the region’s educational and research endeavors.
According to Karakoram International University, the campus represents an investment of Rs. 1350 million, aimed at providing state-of-the-art educational and research facilities to students and faculty alike. The Vice Chancellor highlighted the project’s potential to foster advanced education and innovative research, with plans to attract international faculty and students to GB. A highlight of the campus will be its multipurpose cafeteria, envisioned as a hub for both academic and extracurricular activities.
The commitment to completing the project by June 2024 was underscored, with specific praise for the dedication of the Works team in ensuring the campus’s timely progress. Furthermore, the establishment of a Green Technology Business Incubation Centre on campus underscores KIU’s commitment to sustainable development, focusing on the creation of eco-friendly products and services.
With an initial enrollment of approximately 250 students in programs such as BS Mining Engineering, BS Civil Engineering Technology, and BS Electrical Engineering Technology, the campus is poised to expand its offerings. The anticipated launch of the BS Civil Engineering program in 2024, pending approval from the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC), promises to further enhance the educational landscape in GB.
