Karachi, July 13, 2023 (PPI-OT): Indus Hospital and Health Network (IHHN) hosted a momentous graduation ceremony to celebrate the completion of the inaugural batch from its Foundation Program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine (F-PEM). The program, which commenced in July 2022, successfully equipped 19 dedicated Emergency Department (ED) physicians with the necessary skills to deliver quality care to pediatric patients.
The event, held in Karachi, witnessed an atmosphere brimming with joy and accomplishment as over 80 participants gathered to honor the achievements of the F-PEM program. Esteemed leaders from IHHN, including Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, President of IHHN; Dr. Syed Zafar Zaidi, CEO of IHHN and Dean of Indus University of Health Sciences; Abdul Karim Paracha, Chairman of the Board of Directors, IHHN; and Dr. Ashar Alam, Medical Director, Indus Hospital – Korangi Campus, graced the ceremony with their presence.
Pediatric emergency care in Pakistan faces significant challenges stemming from inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and a shortage of trained healthcare professionals. In response, Indus Hospital and Health Network launched the Foundation Program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine (F-PEM) to train healthcare professionals and enhance the quality of care provided to children.
The F-PEM program, a one-year simulation-based training initiative in Pediatric Emergency care, equips physicians working in EDs with essential knowledge and clinical expertise. Participants learn pediatric resuscitation, history taking, and the application of simulation-based modular education in a clinical setting. Renowned national and international experts in pediatric emergency medicine facilitate the program. The F-PEM curriculum includes the use of Affinity Learning, a simulated web-based environment that allows learners to practice medical decision-making and enhance their practical skills and knowledge.
Registrations for the second cohort will begin at the end of July 2023. Class is due to commence in September 2023. During the ceremony honored the esteemed faculty members of the F-PEM program, including Dr. Syed Ghazanfar Saleem, Dr. Saima Ali, Dr. M. Bilal Hassan, Dr. Sama Mukhtar, Dr. Adeel Khatri, Dr. Uzma Khurram Shaikh, Dr. Quratulain Bushra Noor, and Dr. Unaisa Javed Kazi. Dr. Jabeen Fayyaz, Dr. Nordia Thompson, and Dr. Saba Laila also joined the ceremony online, commending the graduates for their dedication and hard work.
Addressing the graduates, Dr. Abdul Bari Khan said, “It is now your responsibility to not only implement the knowledge and skills you have acquired but also to effectively transfer that knowledge to the teams you work with. The ultimate goal should always be to save a child’s life to the best of your ability.” Mr. Abdul Karim Paracha congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to stay connected with Indus Hospital and Health Network, emphasizing the importance of their continuous efforts to provide adequate care and save the lives of children in need. The ceremony concluded with the distribution of certificates to all participants, marking their successful completion of the F-PEM program.
