Civil Society Lights 8,000 Lamps in Karachi Vigil for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui

Karachi: Dr. Aafia Siddiqui reached 8,000 days of imprisonment, as civil society members gathered in a vigil in front of her residence in Gulshan e Iqbal, lighting 8,000 lamps as a symbol of hope for her release.

According to a statement by Pasban Democratic Party, leaders from various political and social organizations, alongside numerous civil society volunteers, attended the event. Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, a prominent neurophysician and leader of the Aafia Movement, addressed the gathering, expressing disappointment over Dr. Aafia’s prolonged solitary confinement.

Dr. Fowzia criticized the Pakistani government’s lack of efforts to secure the release of Dr. Aafia from a U.S. prison, highlighting a contrast with the government’s previous actions to release American citizen Raymond Davis, who had been involved in the deaths of three Pakistanis.

As Dr. Aafia marks 8,000 days behind bars, Dr. Fowzia reaffirmed the commitment to continue advocating for her sister’s release, emphasizing the movement’s resolve to persist in their struggle.
