Islamabad, 11 Oct 2023:In a seminar addressing the profound interplay between climate change and human rights, Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, shed light on the critical nature of addressing environmental challenges with people-centric solutions. As per a press release from PPP, the Chairman emphasized that the cataclysmic impacts of climate change, as evidenced by the nationwide floods in 2022 and the recent inundations in Punjab, are not mere environmental challenges but deeply rooted human rights issues, affecting the societal structures and individual lives across the nation.
Addressing the seminar titled ‘The Urgency of Action: Climate Change and its implications on Human Rights in Pakistan,’ hosted by the PPP Human Rights Cell via video-link, Chairman Bilawal articulated that the climate crisis isn’t merely a matter of shifting landscapes – from the receding glaciers in the north to the encroaching desertification in the south – but fundamentally a crisis affecting people, communities, and thereby, the nation. He underscored the criticality of recognizing access to clean air, safe drinking water, and a stable climate as fundamental human rights, echoing the essence of freedom of speech, education, and fair trial.
The PPP, holding a legacy of championing human rights, pledged commitments that span from harmonizing climate policies with human rights to ensuring that the most vulnerable communities are not mere bystanders but crucial players in decision-making processes. Further, the party vows to spearhead the Green Revolution through job creation, ensuring that the youth is not only at the forefront of these transformative initiatives but also actively involved in shaping and guiding the pathway forward.
“Our vision does not stop here. We must invest in education that emphasises the importance of sustainability. We need infrastructure that is resilient to the challenges of the future. We must foster international partnerships because the battle against climate change is not one nation’s fight but collective endeavour,” Chairman Bilawal emphasized during his address.
Notably, the Chairman cited PPP’s Sindh’s ‘Apni Zameen Apna Makaan’ programme as a tangible embodiment of the rhetoric, underlining it as an initiative that goes beyond providing shelter by enabling women’s empowerment through land ownership, thereby knitting the very fabric of sustainability and empowerment together. This initiative is aimed not just at providing climate-resilient reconstruction but also amplifying developmental initiatives that empower communities, families, and particularly women, thereby paving the way toward a more sustainable future.
The seminar saw attendance and contributions from significant personalities, including President of the PPP Human Rights Cell, Farhatullah Babar, former federal minister for Climate Change and Vice President PPPP Senator Sherry Rehman, and General Secretary Human Rights Cell PPP Syeda Malaika Raza, among others, who shared insights and perspectives on the pivotal subject at hand.
