Hong Kong’s Nizakat Khan confident his team can qualify for Australia 2022

Dubai, July 04, 2022 (PPI-OT):It has been six years since Hong Kong last graced the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup but captain Nizakat Khan is confident his country can make their return in 2022.

Hong Kong missed out on the 2021 edition after defeat in the 2019 Qualifiers, having previously appeared at the top table in 2014 and 2016.

But now Khan believes his side are better placed than ever to make it through and play against the very best in Australia later this year.

“Our team is looking very good,” said Khan. “We have more experience now in our team compared to our last World Cup qualifiers.

“We are much more balanced this time, and we have a good combination of our spinners and fast bowlers.”

Qualification represents a chance for Khan and his teammates to represent his country on the world stage and pit themselves against the world’s best cricketers. But Khan is also focused on what it could mean for the wider game back home.

“It would mean a lot, especially for our youngsters back in Hong Kong,” added Khan. “They always see us playing cricket, and especially if we play against the top teams, it’s something to boost them up. We’re all really looking forward to this.

“Cricket Hong Kong have been doing really good work for the junior pathway. The 13s, 15s, 17s, 19s and we have the domestic club game and the players are coming up from the system. We have a very good set up in Hong Kong.”

To make their dream a reality, however, Khan knows his side must navigate the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier B in Zimbabwe. Games against the Netherlands, Papua New Guinea and Uganda await before a potential semi-final and final, with two qualification spots up for grabs in total.

Yet skipper Khan has the belief that his side can make it all the way if they keep their minds on their cricket and lean on their experience.

“We are just going to take it game by game,” said Khan. “Every game is important so we need to make sure that we win every single game and execute our plan. We cannot be relaxed in any game, we need to make sure we are up for game one.

“We are really looking forward to it because it’s a great opportunity and we have a great chance to qualify for the World Cup.

“We have a very experienced team now and we can use our experience in the games. We need to make sure we focus on our game, win the games, and try to qualify for the World Cup. We just can’t wait to go out against Uganda in the first game in Zimbabwe.”

There is a personal note, too, for Khan as he leads the side for the first time. The all-rounder has been representing his nation since 2008 and has been a mainstay of the side since starring in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers. But while Khan admits there will be some nerves before the first game, the 29-year-old believes the quality of his team will come to the fore.

“Of course, there will be some pressure but I need to make sure that I relax myself and I need to just focus on the game and focus on my planning,” added Khan.

“It’s a privilege leading the team. I’m very much looking forward to it. I would rank this team higher than before as we have very good experience and are a very balanced side. Our combination of bowlers, batters and fielders are very good. I would rank it really high and I’m very confident we’ll qualify for the World Cup.”

Uganda’s vice-captain looks ahead to Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier B

Dubai, July 03, 2022 (PPI-OT):For Uganda vice-captain Deusdedit Muhumuza, when he steps out onto the cricket pitch he is not just one man playing the sport he loves, he embodies the almost 46 million people who make up his country.

The 32-year-old was born in Kakira in the east of Uganda and learned cricket from the Asian community he lived alongside as they passed on their devotion to the game to him.

Muhumuza made his debut for Uganda in 2010 before earning T20I cap No.4 as the Cricket Cranes gained international status in 2019 and is now hoping to guide them through the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier B.

“It means a lot when the anthem is being sung. You’re remembering the 45 million Ugandans you are representing,” the batting all-rounder said.

“Remembering all those who have trusted you and given up their time just to make you better. You have an opportunity to go out and fight for your country, the country that you love most.

“The three colours that you just want to take forward is black, yellow, and red. Representing just gives inspiration to others.

“You have the opportunity to inspire the kids throughout Uganda, they want to make it to the big stage, and you have the opportunity in your hands to give them that platform.”

Muhumuza’s journey to international cricket gathered pace as he attended Busoga College Mwiri, a leading cricket school in Uganda.

But even before then he had been hovering up all knowledge he could get from his older brothers, with the goal of pulling on the black, yellow and red always in the distance.

He added: “I grew up around an Asian community so I got to learn about cricket easily because that is what they speak and is this what they love most.

“Then I went to the best cricket-playing school in Uganda and since then, it has just been a thrill for me.

“I had my brothers who went to the same school, and I read the papers and whatever they did, whatever they talked about, the cricket stars in the school, it gave me the motivation to knock on the doors of the school team.

“Cricket wasn’t famous in Uganda, but my parents of course they had to come down and learn the game and watch what happens, how you play, how you gain from it, what does it teach you?

“Of course, there are some sacrifices they make, so they had to balance out where their son comes in class and how he moves ahead with his passion for cricket. They have been very instrumental, and I can’t thank them enough for that.”

Uganda are making their return to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier, having not featured since 2013 when they finished 13th.

The Cricket Cranes will hope to make their debut at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by finishing as one of the two finalists in Qualifier B.

“I want to see Uganda play at the World Cup. It has been my dream ever since I began playing cricket. I want Uganda to get this feeling of what happens at the biggest stage of cricket,” he said.

“And that’s what I’ll be looking at even then as a leader, I want to see us walk out as the most agile, the most disciplined, the most fighting team that they have seen at the tournament.

“It would mean a lot, there are kids out there who are talented, who just need that little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.

“It would inspire many people, it would increase the awareness of the game in this country, already it is growing rapidly, the World Cup would just be the final piece of the puzzle.”
