UOL hosts overseas participants of PRA’s Advance Railway Programme 

Lahore, May 14, 2022 (PPI-OT):Eleven overseas participants of the 117th Advance Railway Course at Pakistan Railway Academy (PRA), Walton-Lahore from Kazakhstan, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia accompanied by two faculty members, got a technical tour of the UOL on February 28, 2022. The visit aimed at gaining experience in the environment in which engineering degree programs are taught in Pakistani universities. The delegation that also comprised two faculty members from PRA was received by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf (Rector, UOL) and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ibrar Hussain (Dean, Faculty of Information Technology, Acting Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology and HoD, Software Engineering).

The visit was in response to a letter dated February 23, 2022 by Mr. Abid Ahmad (Assistant Director/Administration, PRA), addressed to the Rector, requesting the UOL to host and comprehensively share engineering experiences with the participants.

PRA offers Advance Railway Course annually in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics and Privatization (Economic Affairs Division), Government of Pakistan, Islamabad under its Technical Assistance Programme. For this year, the programme started on January 24. So far, the Academy has completed more than 113 training courses for hundreds of overseas beneficiaries from more than 40 countries across the world.

Upon arriving at UOL, the delegates were warmly received by the Rector who briefed them about the University’s vision, mission and strategic goals. In an audience of the delegates, HoD, Mechanical Engineering, HoD, Civil Engineering, HoD, Computer Engineering, HoD, Electrical Engineering, and HoD, Technology, Prof. Dr. Hussain gave a detailed presentation about the university that highlighted its history, hierarchy, academic potentials and rankings, accreditation, and international linkages. He specially elaborated all the engineering and technology programmes in terms of their students and faculty numbers, teaching facilities and research status.

Responding to the Dean’s informative presentation, the delegates commended the University administration for the progress made in the teaching of the engineering programmes. An interactive session was held to elucidate all the matters raised by the guests. The guests were led on a guided tour of the engineering and electrical laboratories and other teaching facilities.

Later, the participants were hosted at a luncheon with the Rector and other senior officials of the university management team. On behalf of the Academy, the faculty members who accompanied the participants appreciated the university for the hospitality and support rendered to them.

UOL-trained foreign research scholars appear in the PTV interview

Lahore, May 14, 2022 (PPI-OT):Under OIC’s Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) Consortium of Excellence (CCoE) Fellowship/Training and Research Program, The University of Lahore (UOL) trained three foreign research scholars who were invited for an interview at PTV World for the television program, Diplomatic Enclave with Omar Khalid Butt, aired on February 19, 2021.

In a one-hour session, the research scholars namely; Mr. Md Mahedi Hassan Tusher from Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS), Bangladesh, Dr. Abdoulie Badjan, and Mr. Baba Kunta Fofana from the University of the Gambia, Gambia, shared their journeys of availing the research program. Mr. Tusher was placed at the Department of Pharmacy, where Mr. Fofana and Mr. Badjan were posted at the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology (IMBB) at UOL, where they carried out research in their respective fields of expertise.

Upon asking about his experience at UOL, Mr. Fofana replied that his area of interest and specialization was very closely aligned with the IMBB program offered at UOL which helped him in categorizing genes and exploring the medicinal effect on people of different origins and communities. Dr. Badjan shared the fundamental issues related to infectious diseases that his research addressed, and Mr. Tusher talked about the use of herbs as a cure for diseases as well as the parallels between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

In the end, researchers thanked UOL and COMSTECH for providing them with research opportunities, expressed their willingness to revisit Pakistan, and pledged to act as ambassadors of Pakistan in their countries.

International researchers under COMSTECH Consortium of Excellence applaud UOL 

Lahore, May 14, 2022 (PPI-OT):The University of Lahore (UOL) trained three research scholars, namely: Mr. Mahedi Hassan Tusher from Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS), Bangladesh; Dr. Abdoulie Badjan and Mr. Baba Kunta Fofana from the University of the Gambia, The Gambia, under the COMSTECH Consortium of Excellence (CCoE) Fellowship/Training and Research Program. Upon the completion of six months of training and research, they were invited to the COMSTECH Secretariat, Islamabad, for a Certificate Distribution Ceremony held on February 16, 2022.

Following the ceremony, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary (Coordinator General, COMSTECH) interacted with the scholars and inquired about their experience during their research and training at the University of Lahore. The researchers profoundly expressed their utmost pleasure and satisfaction. They told the Coordinator General, COMSTECH, that they felt extremely fortunate to be shortlisted and they thanked COMSTECH and the University of Lahore for providing them with this wonderful opportunity where they learned new techniques and knowledge in their respective fields of expertise.

These foreign research scholars also lauded the vision of Mr. Awais Raoof (Chairman, Board of Governors, UOL) for this program and his unwavering support throughout their stay at the University. They expressed their hope regarding the extension of the scope of this program so that more and more researchers from the Muslim World could be benefited. In the end, Dr. Choudhary also appreciated the role and contribution of the University of Lahore in this program and pledged to allocate more foreign researchers in the upcoming weeks.

New batches of MBBS, BDS take the Hippocratic Oath 

Lahore, May 14, 2022 (PPI-OT):The University College of Medicine and Dentistry (UCMD) in collaboration with the Character Building Society organized an oath taking ceremony for the newly admitted batch of MBBS and BDS students recently in the eye-capturing fountain ground of the University of Lahore.

This event is held every year by UCMD to not only congratulate the newly admitted students on their great feat but also to welcome them to the institute. The ceremony saw the attendance and participation of senior faculty members and staff that included Prof. Dr. Shahid Malik (Pro-Rector, Health Sciences), Prof. Dr. Mahwish Arooj (Principal, UCMD), Prof. Dr. Rizwan Ashraf (Vice Principal, UCMD), Prof. Dr. Nabila Kaukab (HoD, Anatomy), and other respected medical personalities from UCMD.

The oath taking ceremony for MBBS and BDS batches was held in two separate sessions. The first gathering was held for the MBBS batch in which a charismatic and heartfelt welcome note was given by Dr. Ejaz Waris (HoD, Pathology Department, UCMD). Later, Dr. Arooj addressed the new faces, with a welcoming message filled with inspiration, motivation and empowerment.

She shed light on the importance of the responsibility that was being handed over to the freshly minted medical students, and what a privilege it is to be able to serve the nation as health care practitioners. Later, Mr. Muhammad Arslan (2nd Year MBBS) and Ms. Hadia Khan (4th Year MBBS), shared their experiences throughout their time at UCM.

In the second session, Prof. Dr. Riaz Ahmed Warraich (Principal, University College of Dentistry) gave a message to the young new students of dentistry. One member of UCD alumni enlightened the crowd with his heartfelt journey to becoming a dentist. Later, Pro Rector, Health Sciences administered the oath to newly admitted MBBS and BDS students followed by a group photograph. At the end of the oath, a bunch of balloons were set free in the sky as a sign of hope and new beginnings. The students then enjoyed refreshments and took group photos together to mark this memorable day.

University College of Medicine and Dentistry bids farewell to the graduating class 

Lahore, May 14, 2022 (PPI-OT):The University College of Medicine and Dentistry (UCMD) offers one of the most forward-looking educational environs in Medicine and Dentistry in the country. Recently, the class of fourth-year MBBS arranged a glamorous farewell ceremony for the graduating class of final year MBBS. The celebrations were held in the scenic UOL courtyard which was decorated which absolute beauty. HoDs, Faculty members and students marked their presence at the auspicious event.

The colourful evening was organized and facilitated by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) in collaboration with members of UCMD including Mr. Muhammad Muneeb Ali (CR, Final Year MBBS), Mr. Hamza Mumtaz (President CBS, UCMD), Miss. Nida Zakrya (GR, Final Year, MBBS), Mr. Fahad Ali (CR, 4th Year, MBBS) and Miss. Sara Saleem (GR, 4th Year, MBBS).

The event kicked off as the hosts of the evening Mr. Abul Rehman and Ms. Aunab Baloch (4th Year, MBBS) welcomed the crowd that was already buzzing with excitement. Camera flashes, indistinct conversations, and positive vibes filled the air resulting in a captivating environment that was enjoyed by all guests of the evening.

The night was filled with back to back entertaining student performances. Mr. Usman Zafar (Final Year, MBBS) cracked up the crowd with friendly yet humorous jokes and remarks on his fellow classmates. This was followed by a soulful singing performance by Ms. Arooj Fatima (Final Year, MBBS).

To carry on the entertainment for the evening, the ever so talented Mr. Basit Attiq (Final Year, MBBS) took the stage with his captivating guitar and solo singing performance. To take a break from all the singing, the next two performers Mr. Ali Rohan and Ali Hamza (Final Year, MBBS) shook the stage with their Michael Jackson-inspired dancing performance.

The next segment of the evening was hosted by Mr. Gohar Ayub and Ms. Rabia Nasir Ullah (Final Year, MBBS), in which several students of the graduating class were awarded their distinguished titles. Mr. Mustafa Nadeem (Final Year, MBBS) received the title for “Theeta of the Year” while Ms. Sara Iftikhar (Final Year, MBBS) received the title for “Fashionista of the Year”.

The night took a turn with the cutting of the grand and coveted farewell cake (Courtesy of UCMD), which was preceded by a soulful qawali performance. Students enjoyed the ambience of a bonfire in the background, while everyone took this opportunity to spend time with friends, enjoy qawali, take pictures and capture moments they will cherish forever. The evening came to a close with a charismatic speech delivered by Prof. Dr. Mansab Ali (HoD Surgery, ULTH) who addressed the graduating class with words of encouragement and wisdom. On their exit, the graduating class of final year MBBS was gifted souvenirs.

International Conference on Substance Use Disorders 2022 

Lahore, May 13, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UCP, in collaboration with the phoenix foundation of research and development, organized an international conference on substance use disorders (ICSUD-2022) on 30th and 31st March 2022 at Auditorium, University of Central Punjab.

ICSUD-2022 had the privilege to bring together policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and consumers from diverse disciplines all over the country and internationally.

The conference’s main objective was to bring together eminent researchers, drug specialists, social workers, and scholars from all over the world to highlight current challenges and facts regarding addiction. The focus was on understanding the dynamics of addiction in everyday life, addiction rehabilitation, bio-psychosocial and economic imperatives, patterns of drug-related behaviours, steps and approaches to addressing blocks, and reciprocal impact on society.

The two-day conference was inaugurated by Patron-in-Chief, Dr. Nassar Ikram, Pro-Rector, UCP, followed by opening remarks on substance use disorder by Dr. Noor-ul-Zaman Rafiq, Chief Executive Officer Phoenix Foundation for Research and Development. The Key Note speaker Dr. Kamran Niaz Epidemiologist Research Branch UNODC head Quarter Viana, highlighted the World and national prevalence of drug use.

The Key Note Speaker, Dr. Prapapun, Chucharoen, joined virtually from Mahidol University Thailand to discuss the role of a Psychiatrist in Substance use disorders. Moreover, Brigadier Rashid Minhas, Director of Antinarcotics Force Punjab, and Mr. Rajwal Khan, Senior Program Advisor at UNAIDS, addressed the social risk factors, statistics, and strategic plans for the prevention of substance abuse. Day 1 was concluded with a panel discussion with eminently experienced experts/panellists Dr. Iqbal Naeem, Dr. Uzma Ali, Dr. Usman Amin Hotiana, Mr. Muhammad Ayub, and moderator Dr. Shaiza Hasan shared their experiences, highlights factors, strategies, academic and training courses for professionals, recommendations for general public and prevention for youth followed by a question-answer session.

On day two, The Key Note Speaker Dr. Iqbal Naeem Consultant Psychiatrist, National Health Service UK Hon Senior Lecturer University of Manchester enlightened on the Psychological Impact of hidden Pandemic: screen and |Games Addiction, Guest speaker Dr. Salman Shahzad Associate Professor Institute of Clinical Psychology the University of Karachi addressed the Substance abuse in adolescence: its risk, consequences, and mitigation through the lens of prevention experts, The international Key Note Speaker Mr. Bian How Tay Asia Metropolitan University and Guest Speaker Dr. Cindy Biding Online President of the Organization for Addiction (OAPTAR), Malaysia joined virtually. This was followed by Two Scientific Sessions I and II conducted to increase the academic and research input of the young researchers in the field.
