Australia, England, and Afghanistan Secure Opening Wins at ICC U19 Cricket World Cup

Windhoek: Australia, England, and Afghanistan emerged victorious on the second day of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, each securing crucial wins as the global tournament continued in Namibia. Australia, the defending champions, overpowered Ireland with an eight-wicket triumph, while England defeated Pakistan by 37 runs, and Afghanistan stunned South Africa with a 28-run victory.

According to International Cricket Council, Australia launched their title defense effectively against Ireland at Windhoek. Opting to bowl first, the Australian team restricted Ireland to 235/7, thanks to Charles Lachmund’s impressive three-wicket haul. In response, Australia chased down the target with ease, propelled by a dominant 186-run partnership between Steve Hogan and Nitesh Samuel. Hogan’s century and Samuel’s unbeaten innings clinched the victory for the defending champions, who will face Japan next.

In another encounter, England overcame Pakistan in a tightly contested match. Batting first, England posted a modest total of 210, with Caleb Falconer and Ralphie Albert contributing an 80-run partnership. Despite a disciplined bowling performance from Pakistan, England’s bowlers excelled, dismantling Pakistan’s lineup for 173. England’s next challenge is against Zimbabwe.

Afghanistan delivered the day’s standout performance against South Africa. After posting 266/8, Afghanistan’s fielding prowess ensured South Africa’s chase fell short. Key run outs and effective bowling, particularly from Khatir Stanikzai and Nooristani Omarzai, undermined South Africa’s efforts. Afghanistan’s win sets them up for a match against the West Indies.

The tournament continues with Afghanistan facing the West Indies on Sunday, while South Africa meets Tanzania, and England is set to play Zimbabwe.
