AKU Uganda Inaugurates First Student Executive Council

Kampala, The Aga Khan University (AKU) in Uganda has officially inaugurated its first Students Executive Council (SEC), marking a significant milestone in the institution’s commitment to student engagement and leadership development. The ceremony, led by Dr. Joseph Mwizerwa, Associate Vice Provost of AKU Uganda, was celebrated with the presence of the university’s legal team, faculty, staff, and the entire student body, emphasizing the university’s collective support for this new student governance structure.

According to The Aga Khan University, the establishment of the SEC aims to provide students with a formal platform to express their ideas, concerns, and participate actively in university life. Nicholas Katende, representing University Registrar Dr. Laila Akbarali, highlighted the importance of the SEC in fostering a collaborative environment where students can contribute to university affairs, enhance their leadership skills, and build meaningful partnerships with faculty and the broader community.

The SEC Chair, David Wamoto, in his address, acknowledged the trust placed in the newly elected council by the student body. He committed to serving with diligence and called for cooperation from all stakeholders to support the council’s initiatives. The inaugural council comprises members from the Diploma and Bachelors in nursing and midwifery programs, reflecting the diverse academic interests within the university.

This pioneering step towards student governance at AKU Uganda is set to transition into a more formal electoral process in October, in alignment with the Aga Khan University Students Association (AKUSA) constitution. This initiative underscores AKU’s dedication to nurturing future leaders and enhancing the educational experience through student participation and leadership.
