AKU and U.S. Mission Empower Climate Action Fellows in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Chitral: The Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development, in partnership with the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar, celebrated the Climate Action Fellows in Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, acknowledging their innovative environmental projects which will receive funding for further development. This initiative is a key component of a broader project aimed at enhancing environmental protection awareness and action.

According to The Aga Khan University, The event marked a pivotal moment for the “Raise Awareness and Inspire Action on Environmental Protection” project, which began in September 2023 and will continue through October 2024. It seeks to prepare educators across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to foster environmental stewardship among students and communities through innovative teaching methods and hands-on projects.

Dr. Fozia Parveen, Assistant Professor and Project Lead at AKU-IED, shared insights on the origins and aspirations of the fellowship, emphasizing the enthusiastic participation and commitment of teachers in the non-stipendiary program. Their proposed action plans aim to address pressing environmental issues and promote sustainable practices within their locales.

The fellowship program attracted 500 applications, from which 50 educators were selected to undergo a series of workshops in Chitral and Peshawar. These workshops were designed to equip teachers with the necessary skills to lead initiatives on climate change education and sustainability in their schools and communities.

U.S. Consul General in Peshawar, Shante Moore, highlighted the commitment of the U.S. to supporting environmental education in the region, noting that the initiative aligns with the U.S. Embassy’s Green Alliance strategy to foster a more sustainable future.

The project also involves key stakeholders and policymakers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, ensuring that the educational efforts have a broader impact. Mr. Abdul Akram, Additional Secretary of Education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, commented on the critical role of teachers in promoting environmental consciousness and empowering students to tackle environmental challenges through innovative solutions.

As the project moves forward, AKU-IED continues to support the network of educators involved, aiming to create significant, long-lasting impacts on environmental protection and climate resilience in the region.
