Aga Khan University Hosts Influential Conference on Climate Change and Health

Karachi, The Aga Khan University, in collaboration with the Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD-AKU), the Sustainable Solutions Development Network Pakistan (SDSN-PK), and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), successfully concluded its annual conference titled “Climate Change, Health, and Environment: Opportunities for Change”. This event gathered global experts to discuss the intertwined issues of environmental studies, health, and climate change.

According to Aga Khan University, the conference featured prominent speakers, including Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta, Director at IGHD-AKU, who emphasized the critical importance of climate change in global health, especially for the younger generation. Dr. Sanjay Wijesekera, Regional Director for UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia, delivered a keynote address highlighting the urgency of building a climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable health system. By 2050, nearly 6 billion people are predicted to be affected by climate change, underscoring the need for immediate action.

Dr. Maureen Lichtveld, Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, and Dr. Jill Baumgartner from McGill University, Montreal, also contributed their insights and expertise. Dr. Jai Das, Assistant Director at IGHD-AKU, echoed the sentiment that climate change poses a profound impact on environmental degradation and human health, recognizing it as an existential threat to humanity.

The conference facilitated rich discussions among participants, who shared innovative solutions and research findings.
