Theatre Play “Goongi” Explores Moral Dilemmas Amidst Flood Crisis at Sindhi Festival

KARACHI: The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi showcased the theatre play "Goongi" on the second day of the "Wes-Dhaari Sindhi Theatre Festival 2026," captivating audiences with its portrayal of survival and moral conflict. The play, written by Mujeeb Bardi and directed by Arshad Sheikh, was met with a positive reception from attendees.

According to Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, "Goongi" features performances by Laiba, Umair Bhutto, Nadir Hussain, and Arshad Sheikh, who depicted the emotional challenges faced by their characters. The narrative centers on four individuals stranded on a bridge surrounded by floodwaters, grappling with the absence of food and clean water. The discovery of a deceased child's body in the floodwaters intensifies their plight, leading them to confront a harrowing decision that pits survival instincts against core human values.

The play delves into themes of endurance, hunger, and the psychological toll of extreme adversity, questioning the extent to which survival instincts can drive individuals into moral predicaments. "Goongi" serves as a reflection on the psychological and ethical trials encountered during dire circumstances, illustrating the impact of extreme situations on human behavior and decision-making processes.

Sindhi theatre performances continue to be held nightly at 8:00 pm in Auditorium II, with free entry for the public.
