Karachi: In the General Elections of 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-250 Karachi Central-IV obtained 79,925 votes, which accounted for 42% of the 191,042 ballots cast. This figure represents only 14% of the 553,540 registered voters in the constituency. Under Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, a candidate is required to have the highest vote share to win a seat, not a majority.
According to Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency revealed a voter turnout of 35%. Despite the victory, the winner lacked the support of the majority of those who voted on February 8, 2024, as 108,439 voters, or 57%, cast their votes for other candidates.
The runner-up candidate garnered 23% of the votes, with the third-placed candidate receiving 20%, and the remaining candidates collectively securing 14% of votes. A total of 2,678 ballots, or 1%, were declared invalid.
This analysis is part of FAFEN's study of electoral representativeness across Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The FPTP system allows candidates with the highest vote totals to win seats without necessarily having majority support, unlike a proportional representation (PR) system, which allocates seats in line with the vote shares won by parties or candidates. Pakistan's GE-2024 data illustrate the gap between votes cast and representation secured across all constituencies.
