Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari marked World Environment Day with a call to action for both citizens and the global community to address the pressing challenges of climate change. Emphasizing the immediate impacts of rising temperatures, extreme weather, and environmental degradation, President Zardari highlighted the critical need for proactive measures to protect lives and economies worldwide.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, the focus of this year's World Environment Day is on climate action, underscoring the importance of current decisions on the future quality of life. President Zardari noted the multifaceted nature of climate change, describing it as not only an environmental issue but also a challenge impacting public health, food security, economic growth, and sustainable development. Despite contributing less than one percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, Pakistan remains highly vulnerable to climate impacts, which exacerbate risks for farmers, communities, and key economic sectors.

President Zardari outlined the practical consequences of environmental degradation, such as diminished access to clean water, reduced agricultural productivity, and increased strain on public services. Extreme weather events further threaten infrastructure and daily life across the nation. He called for responsible resource management, waste reduction, forest protection, biodiversity preservation, and the promotion of cleaner energy sources.

The President encouraged active involvement from youth, civil society, academia, religious leaders, media, and the private sector in raising awareness and developing solutions. He reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to international cooperation in areas such as ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, disaster preparedness, and climate-resilient development. President Zardari urged collective resolve to ensure a safer and more resilient Pakistan for future generations.
