CHITRAL: The University of Chitral, in collaboration with Focus Humanitarian Assistance Pakistan, hosted a programme to observe the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The event, themed "Resilience Starts at Home," aimed to emphasize the significance of preparedness, awareness, and community resilience in mitigating the effects of disasters.
According to University of Chitral, the programme featured Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Hazir Ullah as the chief guest. In his address, he commended Focus Humanitarian Assistance Pakistan for organizing the awareness initiative and underscored the necessity for individuals and communities to be prepared for disasters. Reflecting on the devastating 2005 earthquake, Prof. Dr. Hazir Ullah highlighted the severe human and economic losses caused by disasters, stressing that awareness, preparedness, and timely response can significantly lessen their impact. He further mentioned the global economic toll of disasters, making disaster risk reduction a priority for governments, institutions, and communities.
Wali Muhammad, RPM of Focus Humanitarian Assistance Pakistan, expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor for his involvement and praised the University for facilitating the promotion of disaster preparedness and risk reduction. The event also saw participation from officials and representatives of Rescue 1122, Police, and the District Administration. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Abdul Salam, representing the District Administration, discussed the importance of coordinated preparedness and emergency response mechanisms.
A ShakeOut earthquake drill was conducted to provide participants with hands-on experience in safety measures during an earthquake. Students, faculty members, and other participants actively engaged in the drill. Additionally, awareness stalls were set up by FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance Pakistan and Rescue 1122 at the university's main lawn. These stalls offered information on disaster preparedness, emergency response, safety measures, and risk reduction practices.
The programme concluded with the presentation of shields to the chief guest and other distinguished attendees in recognition of their participation and support.
