NA-212 MNA Secures Seat with Only 28% Voter Support

Mirpurkhas: In the recent General Election of 2024, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-212 Mirpurkhas-II secured victory with 122,291 votes, equating to 60% of the 204,815 ballots cast, but only 28% of the total 432,341 registered voters in the constituency. This reflects the dynamics of Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system where a candidate wins by having the highest number of votes, not necessarily a majority.

According to Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) reported a voter turnout of 47 percent in the constituency. NA-212 was among 70 out of 266 National Assembly constituencies where the winner secured 50% or more of the polled votes. However, 74,590 voters, or 36%, did not support the winning candidate. Furthermore, the winner's share among the total registered voters stood at only 28%.

The runner-up in the constituency garnered 22% of the ballots cast, while the candidate in third place received 10%. The remaining candidates together secured 4% of the votes. In addition, 7,934 ballots, or 4%, were declared invalid.

This report is part of FAFEN's analysis of electoral representativeness in Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The FPTP system often results in elected members who lack majority support, unlike a proportional representation system where seats are distributed in line with the vote shares received. The data from Pakistan's GE-2024 highlights the gap between the votes cast and the representation achieved across all constituencies.
