MNA Secures Only 21% Voter Support in NA-200 Sukkur-I

SUKKUR: In a revealing outcome from Pakistan’s General Election 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-200 Sukkur-I obtained 98,244 votes, representing 54% of the votes cast, but only 21% of the 457,057 registered voters in the constituency. This highlights the dynamics of Pakistan’s First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, where the winning candidate is the one with the highest vote total, not necessarily a majority.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, the final consolidated result (Form-49) indicated a voter turnout of 39 percent in NA-200. The constituency was one of 70 out of 266 where the winner managed to secure 50% or more of the polled votes. Nevertheless, a significant portion of the electorate, amounting to 75,398 or 42%, did not support the winning candidate. The winner’s share among the total registered voters remained at a mere 21%.

The runner-up candidate garnered 23% of the votes cast, while the third-placed candidate received 11%. The remaining candidates collectively secured 8% of the votes, with 6,625 ballots, or 4%, declared invalid. This analysis is part of FAFEN’s broader examination of electoral representativeness across Pakistan’s 266 constituencies. Under the FPTP system, the candidate with the most votes wins, often leaving elected members without majority support. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate seats based on the vote shares, reflecting a wider array of voter preferences. The data from Pakistan’s GE-2024 underscores the disparity between the votes cast and the representation achieved across all constituencies.
