AKU Global Research Showcase Highlights Ethical AI Solutions for Health and Education


Karachi: Researchers at Aga Khan University (AKU) are utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Intelligence (DI) to tackle significant challenges in health, education, and development, focusing on ethical applications and global impact.



According to The Aga Khan University, the AKU Global Research Showcase, organized by the university’s Research Office, featured various AI-driven projects addressing issues such as tuberculosis diagnosis through AI-powered cough analysis and machine learning models for maternal and child health. The event, held both in Karachi and online, was attended by faculty, students, alumni, donors, and policymakers from AKU’s international network, highlighting the use of AI in low- and middle-income settings.



Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, AKU President and Vice Chancellor, emphasized the university’s active role in responsibly shaping the future of AI. He stated, “At AKU, we are not bystanders in the age of AI. We are innovators who are discovering how this powerful technology can advance health, education, and scholarship.”



The event featured presentations by AKU faculty and students on AI applications in areas such as cancer diagnostics, radiotherapy, and education. Dr. Ravi Pendse from the University of Michigan delivered the keynote address, stressing the need for human-centered AI that prioritizes trust, ethics, and societal benefit.



The program also unveiled AKU’s Digital Innovation Mapping Report, identifying over 300 digital and AI-enabled initiatives across the university. The report called for enhanced governance and collaboration to scale impactful innovations responsibly. A panel discussion with experts from AKU, LUMS, and the NHS further explored issues like data governance and algorithmic bias.



Professor Salim Virani, Vice Provost, Research at AKU, remarked on the potential of AI to address complex challenges, while Dr. Tania Bubela, AKU Provost and Vice President, Academic, reflected on the university’s role as a global institution driving impactful research.



The Showcase underscored AKU’s commitment to advancing AI-enabled research that meets real-world needs and contributes to discussions on ethical innovation and the future of AI in research.
