Sargodha: A high-level meeting was convened at the University of Sargodha to address strategies for enhancing citrus production and exports, chaired by Barrister Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha. The session, held at the university’s Multipurpose Hall, brought together key figures from the agricultural and industrial sectors to formulate a comprehensive plan aimed at boosting the region’s citrus output and market reach.
Attendees included Secretary Agriculture Iftikhar Ali, Secretary Industries and Planning Umar Masood, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Waseem, and several academic leaders from the university. The gathering also saw participation from local landlords, farmers, and officials from the Agriculture Department, underscoring the collaborative effort required to tackle the challenges facing citrus production.
Barrister Ranjha underscored the significance of citrus, especially kinnow, to Sargodha’s economy. He noted that climate change and diseases have recently impacted yields negatively. The task force, established under directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, aims to develop strategies to counter these effects and enhance international market access.
Ranjha emphasized the importance of resolving farmers’ issues promptly and praised the University of Sargodha for its role in supporting the agricultural sector. He tasked Chairman Horticulture Dr. Rashid Mukhtar Bilal with formulating a detailed plan, known as PC-1, in consultation with stakeholders to ensure effective implementation.
Prof. Dr. Masood Sarwar Awan highlighted the university’s efforts in establishing a modern nursery and offering advanced facilities to farmers. He noted that a robust strategy is in place to potentially double citrus production, indicating the institution’s commitment to agricultural development.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Waseem lauded the university’s focus on agriculture, crediting Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas for spearheading initiatives that promote this sector. Dr. Rashid Mukhtar Bilal reiterated the university’s dedication to enhancing kinnow production and outlined plans for a citrus processing unit, expected to boost both production and exports.
The meeting concluded with Prof. Dr. Awan presenting a commemorative souvenir to Barrister Ranjha, symbolizing the university’s recognition of his leadership and commitment to improving citrus production in Sargodha.
