Lahore: A significant seminar titled “Non-Traditional Security Challenges to South Asia” was held at the Centre for South Asian Studies, University of the Punjab. The event featured a keynote address by Mr. Ihsan Ghani, former IG of KPK and DG of Intelligence Bureau, on the pressing security challenges that are not traditionally acknowledged but are crucial to the stability of the region.
According to University of the Punjab, Mr. Ghani delved into the complexities of non-traditional security threats, highlighting their transnational nature and socio-economic and political dimensions. He pointed out the unique position of South Asia, which, despite its rich natural resources, has struggled to harness its potential due to these pervasive threats. Mr. Ghani stressed the importance of understanding that these challenges do not arise from state competition or shifts in power balances but from deeper socio-economic and political issues.
The seminar encouraged a broad dialogue among attendees, focusing on how regional and international influences exploit these vulnerabilities. Mr. Ghani advocated for a significant shift in perspective and approach to addressing the multifaceted problems facing South Asia, suggesting that a focus on non-traditional security challenges could prevent further chaos and instability in the region.
