Karachi Protest Calls for Justice in Journalist Nasrullah Gadani’s Killing

Karachi, In response to the brutal killing of journalist Nasrullah Gadani, a coalition of labor organizations including the National Trade Union Federation Pakistan (NTUF) and Home Based Women Workers Federation Pakistan (HBWWF) staged a demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club. The protesters condemned the alleged complicity of state and upper class actors in silencing democratic voices through violence.

According to Home-Based Women Workers Federation, speakers at the event, including leaders from various social, political, and human rights groups, voiced their concerns over the increasing incidents of violence against journalists and activists. They highlighted the role of powerful societal elements such as landlords and tribal chiefs in perpetuating these injustices. The murder of Gadani near Mirpur Mathilo in Ghotki was cited as a recent example, where the involvement of local tribal leadership was suspected to be backed by government support.

The protesters put forth several demands, including the arrest of those responsible for Gadani’s death and other similar crimes, implementation of the Sindh Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners Act 2021, recovery of missing individuals like poet Ahmed Farhad, and comprehensive agricultural reforms to dismantle feudal structures.
