Karachi, In a significant appeal to Pakistan’s newly elected Prime Minister, Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, leader of the Global Aafia Movement and a renowned neurophysician, congratulated him on his election to the office for a second term and urged him to actively seek the early release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani citizen currently imprisoned in the United States.
According to Aafia Movement, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui expressed her hopes that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would uphold the honor and dignity of his constitutional office by fighting for the rights of oppressed and weak Pakistani citizens, including Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. She highlighted the commitment of Aafia’s American lawyer, Clive Smith, to work towards making 2024 the year of Aafia’s release, a goal that he insists requires the active support of the Pakistani government and its Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Dr. Fowzia also recalled that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had issued directives during his previous tenure to facilitate efforts for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s release and arranged meetings between herself and her sister, who is jailed in the US. She reflected on the painful circumstances of her visits to her sister in US custody and emphasized the importance of continued government support under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership.
Furthermore, Dr. Fowzia questioned the inability of previous Pakistani prime ministers since 2003, the year Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was allegedly abducted from Karachi, to complete their full terms in office, linking it to a lack of public confidence. She expressed hope that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s efforts to bring Dr. Aafia Siddiqui back to Pakistan would reinforce the trust of the Pakistani people in their government.
