Faisalabad, From a quest for an affordable gaming option to establishing a lucrative online game distribution business, Bilal Ashraf, a student at the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), has founded The Game Drawer (TGD). Within just its first year of operation, TGD has achieved sales exceeding $300,000, a testament to Ashraf’s entrepreneurial spirit and innovative approach to the digital gaming market.
According to Lahore University of Management Sciences, Ashraf’s journey began with his academic pursuits in Economics and Mathematics, complemented by courses in Computer Science and Finance. This unique combination of studies equipped him with the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of a global business. His venture started from a simple desire to find a cost-effective way to access a popular game, leading him to discover a niche market for distributing online licensed games in Pakistan.
Ashraf’s initial strategy involved acting as a middleman, purchasing online licensed games from international markets at lower prices and selling them in Pakistan. His business acumen led him to expand his operations beyond local game shops in Faisalabad to major cities like Lahore and Islamabad and eventually to Daraz, South Asia’s leading e-commerce platform. Not satisfied with small profits, Ashraf delved deeper into understanding the supply chain of digital gaming, eventually establishing TGD as a direct supplier of Xbox CD keys.
The entrepreneurial journey was not without its challenges. Limited by initial funding, Ashraf’s breakthrough came with support from a friend and later significant investment from his brother, which propelled TGD forward. Leveraging his programming skills, Ashraf automated many of TGD’s processes, enhancing operational efficiency and allowing the business to scale rapidly.
The business faced a turning point in 2022 following the Russian-Ukraine conflict when Western sanctions against Russia created a payment vacuum for Russian gamers. Ashraf quickly identified this gap and expanded TGD’s catalog to include Steam games, catering to the Russian market and eventually penetrating European markets. This strategic pivot not only diversified TGD’s product offerings but also underscored Ashraf’s ability to adapt to changing market dynamics.
Looking ahead, Ashraf is optimistic about TGD’s growth potential, focusing on efficiency and market expansion. He also plans to introduce innovative services to meet emerging market needs. His experience at LUMS has been instrumental in shaping his entrepreneurial journey, demonstrating the practical application of interdisciplinary education in solving real-world problems and achieving business success.
