SMIU Partners with Organizations to Host Pink Ribbon Youth Awareness Program on Breast Cancer

Karachi, Addressing the pervasive lack of breast cancer awareness in society, experts underscored the importance of regular check-ups in early detection and prevention at the “Pink Ribbon Youth Awareness Program,” hosted by Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU).

According to a news release by Sindh Madressatul Islam University, the event was organized by its Directorate of Students Affairs and Counselling and saw collaborations from the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), Women and Sports Commission, Colgate Palmolive Pakistan, and Syed Foundation. The gathering took place in SMIU’s auditorium.

Dr. Usra Pervaiz, a renowned general and breast surgeon, and assistant professor of general surgery at SIUT, emphasized that breast cancer could be mitigated if diagnosed at an initial stage. Regular check-ups are vital, she remarked, adding that it’s imperative for male family members to support their female counterparts in this endeavour. Dr. Pervaiz also detailed various methods employed for detecting breast cancer and current treatment techniques. She praised SMIU for its consistent contribution to quality education and the broader societal awareness.

Dr. Shahnaz Memon, previously the senior chief women medical officer at the Department of Health, Government of Sindh, rallied the students, urging them to take the mantle in initiating societal transformation.

Assistant Professor Muhammad Naeem Ahmed, who also serves as the Director of Students Affairs and Counselling at SMIU, extended gratitude to all collaborators for the event and urged students to disseminate the vital information from the session to their families and peers.

Ms. Fatima Lakhani, chairperson of the POA’s Women Sports Commission, commended such awareness initiatives, noting their potential in enlightening women about crucial health concerns.

Among those in attendance were representatives from the POA, Syed Hashmi, President of the Syed Foundation, female educators, staff members, and a significant number of SMIU students. The event proceedings were directed by Ms. Zonaira Jalali.
