Bugti Stadium enclosures to be named after modern-day stars 

Lahore, January 26, 2023 (PPI-OT):Pakistan’s most celebrated woman cricketer, Sana Mir, most successful Test captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, leading Test batter, Younis Khan, and an all-format star, Shahid Afridi, are amongst 10 former international cricketers who will be honoured by having the Bugti Stadium enclosures in their names, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced today.

The other six cricketers are: Kiran Baloch, Mohammad Yousuf, Saeed Ajmal, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shoaib Khan and Shoaib Malik.

The enclosures were named after these cricketers in recognition of their contributions and services to Pakistan cricket, which also aligns with the PCB’s plans and drive to improve, uplift and enhance spectator and playing facilities at the Bugti Stadium in preparation of the venue being made to host future high-profile matches.

Chair of the PCB Management Committee, Najam Sethi: “The contributions of these 10 cricketers are meritorious and it is important that we recognise their achievements and accomplishments by naming Bugti Stadium stands in their names.

This will be PCB’s small token of appreciation to these players, which will also help in creating awareness about Pakistan stars and game development in the Balochistan province. These 10 cricketers are household names and, admired and followed by all generations of cricket lovers.

May this gesture from the PCB and the example of Nahida Khan, who has been one of the shining stars from Quetta, inspire more young women to become cricketers. PCB’s five other international venues, including the Gaddafi Stadium (Lahore), Iqbal Stadium (Faisalabad), Multan Cricket Stadium (Multan), National Bank Cricket Arena (Karachi) and Pindi Cricket Stadium (Rawalpindi) already have enclosure named after former international cricketers.

About the 10 international cricketers:

Kiran Baloch – Kiran played three Tests and 40 ODIs from 1997 to 2004. She scored 242 against the West Indies women at the National Stadium in March 2004, which is still a world record

Misbah-ul-Haq – Misbah captained Pakistan in most Tests (56) and won 26, more than any other Pakistan Test captain, 87 ODIs and eight T20Is. He led Pakistan to the number-one spot in the ICC Test Championship in 2016 and was a member of the squad that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2009

Mohammad Yousuf – Yousuf is a world-record holder for most Test runs in a calendar year (1,788 runs in 11 Tests with nine centuries), which earned him the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award for 2007. In a 90-Test and 288-ODI career from 1998 to 2010, the elegant right-handed batter scored 7,530 and 9,720 runs, respectively

Saeed Ajmal – In 212 international matches, the off-spinner took 447 wickets, including 178 in Tests, 184 in ODIs and 85 in T20Is. He was a member of the squad that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2009.

Sana Mir – In a 15-year career, she played 226 internationals, including 137 as captain from 2009 to 2017. In October 2018, she peaked to number-one on ICC Women’s Rankings for ODI Bowlers and was named as captain of Wisden’s Women’s Team of the Decade. She is a member of the ICC Women’s Committee

Saqlain Mushtaq – The inventor of doosra, Saqlain took 208 Test and 288 ODI wickets in 49 Tests and 169 ODIs, respectively. He was one of Wisden Cricketers of the Year for 2000.

Shahid Afridi – Shahid Afridi stroked the then fast ODI century off 37 balls in his second match, took a five-fer on his Test debut and followed up with a century against India in Chennai. In 524 international matches, he scored 11,196 runs and took 541 wickets. He was a member of the squad that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2009.

Shoaib Khan – Born in Bostan, a town outside Quetta, Shoaib is the only men’s cricketer from the Balochistan province to represent Pakistan. He featured in four T20Is in Canada in 2008. He played 65 first-class and 22 T20 matches, scoring 3,695 runs and 533 runs, respectively

Shoaib Malik – The all-rounder played 35 Tests, 287 ODIs and 124 T20Is, accumulating 11,867 runs and taking 218 wickets. He was Pakistan captain in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2007 where his side reached the final and was at the crease with Shahid Afridi when Pakistan achieved the 139-run victory target to win the 2009 final at Lord’s

Younis Khan – Younis Khan is a PCB Hall of Famer, who featured in third most Tests for Pakistan (118) in which he accumulated most Test runs for Pakistan (10,099) and scored most Test centuries (34). He played in four ICC Men’s Cricket World Cups from 2003-2015 and finished his 265-match ODI career with 7,249 runs with seven centuries. He captained Pakistan to their first world title in 17 years when he lifted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2009 trophy at Lord’s

Voices Against Tobacco Holds Improve Theatre for Tobacco Awareness and Prevention

Karachi, January 26, 2023 (PPI-OT):Voices Against Tobacco (VAT), an initiative of Indus Hospital and Health Network (IHHN), hosted notable guests, staff, and the public for an impactful theatre performance on the impact of tobacco at The Indus Hospital – Korangi Campus on January 25, 2023.

This event was held to engage the public, private sector, and policymakers in dialogue on the impact of tobacco use, especially on marginalized communities, and the need for improved tobacco control advocacy. It was done in partnership with Brand Accord and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK).

The senior leadership from IHHN attended the event, including Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, President of IHHN; Mashhood Rizvi, Executive Director of IHHN’s Communication and Resource Directorate; and Dr. Saima Saeed, Director of IHHN’s Lung Health Program and Consultant Pulmonologist. Representatives of AKU, SIMU, SPARC, SSDO, and PANAH were also present.

Following a recitation of the Holy Quran, opening remarks were given by Dr. Samia Saeed, who briefed the audience on the widespread impact of Tobacco on the people of Pakistan and the work being done by VAT to counter it. This was followed by an exciting and engaging theatre performance that sent a clear message about the prevalence of tobacco in marginalized communities and its impact on the youth. The play also touched upon tobacco sellers placed near schools which is illegal.

Speeches were given by Mr. Muhammad Iqbal Memon, Commissioner of Karachi; Jibran Siddiqui, CEO of Brand Accord; and Dr. Ghulam Mustafa, Managing Director of STEVTA. All thanked the team at IHHN and particularly its Community Engagement Centers (CEC) for their instrumental role in making the campaign possible. They also expressed hope for partnering with IHHN in future healthcare initiatives.

Afterward, Certificates were distributed to the team members involved in making the campaign a resounding success. Closing remarks were given by Dr. Abdul Bari Khan, who thanked the audience, the team at IHHN, and the partnering organizations for their hard work and efforts in strengthening Pakistan’s primary healthcare.

Background:

In response to the urgent need for tobacco control in Pakistan, Indus Hospital and Health Network (IHHN) launched its Voices Against Tobacco (VAT) program in 2021 with the aim to create a dialogue and meaningful change to improve tobacco control measures in the country. VAT has worked across Sindh and Punjab to engage the youth to promote positive cultural change amongst their peers and communities by empowering them to take ownership of their health and future.

In collaboration with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK), VAT is now focusing on investing in marginalized communities with limited access to information and resources. Subsequently, VAT has achieved this through valuable community engagement, including improve theatre, which has shown itself to be an excellent method of relaying information to audiences in a collaborative and engaging manner.

VAT collaborated with Brand Accord to adapt tobacco awareness and advocacy messaging into a theatre performance that will have a long-lasting impact. The performance touched on several important aspects of tobacco, including health consequences, accessibility for the youth, economic impact, need for advocacy, and lack of regulation and implementation.

VAT’s community activities have been strongly supported by IHHN’s Community Engagement Center (CEC). CEC health workers were trained on tobacco awareness and tobacco control advocacy, after which they engaged with community members on the ground in dialogue on tobacco, encouraging them to advocate for their own well-being, as well as that of their larger communities. Leveraging their long-standing relationships with marginalized communities across Karachi, the CEC health workers are supporting the execution of improve theatre performances across key areas where tobacco use is extremely prevalent, including Korangi, Lyari, and Baba Island. Thus far, VAT has engaged over 100+ community members through eight street performances.

The performances have garnered an extremely positive response. People support the cause as they want their family members and spouses to quit. For current users moved by the performance, tobacco cessation leaflets were handed out. Signatures were also collected from the community to support the new VAT petition. Across the board, community members agree that the youth should not have access to tobacco.

Voices Against Tobacco (VAT) Future Endeavours:

VAT is also working on improving tobacco control policies through youth and community advocacy. Last year, VAT introduced a petition to ask for a 30% tax increase on tobacco products. This petition garnered more than 8,000 signatures from communities all across Sindh and Punjab.

With combined efforts of IHHN, CTFK, SPARC, PANAH, and other partners, a tax increase on tobacco was included in the 2022 Finance Bill – the first tobacco tax increase in 4 years. In the wake of this great achievement for the anti-tobacco cause, this year VAT has launched a new petition to ask for a ban on all novel tobacco and nicotine products in Pakistan to protect the youth and adolescents from addiction and cognitive damage. 3 in 5 Pakistanis report seeing a doctor in the last 12 months: Gallup and Gilani Pakistan

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women from across the country was asked the following question regarding, “Have you seen a doctor in the last 12 months?” 59% said yes while 41% responded no.

Using app cloners, fraudsters can create and access multiple instances of the same app from a single device. Fraud syndicates further scale the breadth of their fraud strategy by replicating this across many devices. Fake accounts can be used to complete ghost rides – rides that do not actually happen – to quickly rack up ride completion incentives. Fake accounts can also be combined with GPS spoofers to simulate high demand in one area, causing fare surges fraud syndicates profit from.

Proactively looking to stop fraud, inDrive will leverage the SHIELD ID, the global standard for device identification that links fake devices created from the same physical device, which could number in the thousands. The SHIELD ID will empower inDrive to identify instances of multiple driver or passenger accounts being operated from the same device. At the same time, SHIELD’s AI technology can pinpoint large numbers of accounts tapping on the same IP address or subnet. SHIELD’s Risk Indicators will detect the installation and activation of all malicious tools and techniques on the platform, such as GPS spoofers, tampered apps, and app cloners.
