Mehfil-e-Mohsineen by Habib University: A Special Day of Gratitude 

Karachi, December 30, 2021 (PPI-OT):Pakistan is considered one of the most generous nations in the world, and while primary and secondary education do garner philanthropic support, higher education is neglected. As a result, a large portion of its youth is unable to acquire quality Higher Education, primarily because of a huge negative gap between the annual household income and the high cost of private universities in the country. Habib University, recognizing this national dilemma, has been vigorously striving to deal with this obstacle with the help of a committed community of supporters.

To honour this community and express gratitude towards the dedication and generosity of its benefactors, Habib University organized a “Mehfil-e-Mohsineen”. Attendees included supporters of Habib University, donors, senior leadership from the corporate sector, media, and members of civil society. For a number of invitees, who were visiting the campus for the first time, were awed to see the award-winning campus.

Highlight of the event was the dedication of the university’s amphitheater as the “Saima and Shahbaz Malik Amphitheater,” in recognition of the generous support extended by Mr. Shahbaz Yasin Malik, CEO, Hilton Pharma and his wife, Saima Malik, which is instrumental in providing students from local examination boards, the opportunity to attain a world class education.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Wasif A. Rizvi, President, Habib University commended the efforts of the benefactors, “The secret ingredient of creating the highest quality possible university which is comparable to any in the world and then making it accessible to students, especially from underprivileged backgrounds, are the supporters of Habib University.” He thanked Shahbaz Yasin Malik and his family for standing with Habib University since the very beginning and supporting its cause.

Mr. Rafiq M. Habib, Chancellor, Habib University, also expressed his gratitude to the supporters of the university for their continuous support, thanking the philanthropic belief of the family. “Sardar Yasin Malik and his son, Shahbaz, were one of the very first community co-founders of this institution, and their support gave Habib family confidence, faith and courage in building this amazing university.”

Mr. Shahbaz Malik while addressing the audience provided insight into the reason for his family’s continued support, “Habib University provides a transformative educational experience to the youth and promotes diversity by supporting students from various socioeconomic backgrounds, which is one of the biggest inspirations for our family to become ambassadors and supporters to this cause.”

Mr. Mohomed Bashir, Chairman, Gul Ahmed Textile Mills and Chair, Resource Development Committee, Habib University was also present at the event to extend his support. He thanked the Mohsineen for their generosity and encouraged them to carry on with their investment in the future of Pakistan. “Universities are not easy to build but once we build them, it is our responsibility to keep them going. I thank Shahbaz Yasin Malik and Rafiq M. Habib for playing their part in doing so”.

Meetings of Board of Advanced Studies held 

Islamabad, December 30, 2021 (PPI-OT):Meetings of Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR-16 to 20) of the year 2021 were held at New Campus. Final meeting of the Board for this year held under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Shuja Syed, Vice President (R and E) of International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI).

Chair of the BASR Meetings, Dr. Shuja Syed urged the board members to promote scientific research and guide students to use latest scientific tools during their research projects and focus on societal needs as well. He also advised to guide students to adopt contemporary topics while identifying research topics.

During the meetings, the board discussed and analyzed synopses of PhD and MS students of Faculty of Shariah and Law, Faculty of Arabic, Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arabic, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of languages and Literature, Faculty of Management Sciences and international Institute of Islamic Economics (IIIE), IIUI.

During the meetings, the board members shared valuable suggestions with the chair of the meetings and future research work of the students was also discussed. The meetings were also attended by Prof. Dr. Ayaz Afsar, Vice President (Academics), Dr. Nadeem Ahmed Shaikh, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology and Secretary, Board of Advanced Studies Meetings, Deans of faculties, Head of Departments of concerned departments and relevant Officials of Research Section (Examination) of the University.

Teams of Hostel 4 and 5 Advance to Final of Cricket Tournament 

Islamabad, December 30, 2021 (PPI-OT):As Hostels’ employees cricket tournament enters into final stages teams of hostel 4 and 5 have sealed their places in final after winning semi-finals respectively. The cricket tournament is organized by Provost office in which 8 teams from hostels are participating. 6 teams hail from new campus hostels and 2 teams are included from Kuwait hostels Faisal Masjid Campus.

According to details, the 1st semi-final was played between Hostel 5 and 6 that was won by hostel 5. Vice President OWA /Director Administration, Ayaz Ali, Finance Secretary OWA Arslan Khurshid and member executive Council Finance OWA, Mr. Aqeel Ahmed were chief guests.

The 2nd Semi-final was played Hostels 2 and 4 that was won by hostel 4. Maqsood Khattak General Secretary and members USWA and members of its executive council including, Syed Iqbal shah, Mr. Jhangir and Raja Amjad were the chief guests. Provost male, Dr. Abrar Anver, Assistant Director Sports male hostels, Khalid Chaudhary, Assistant Director Hostels Ali Rafay and other staff members of Provost Office were also present on the occasion.

Provost male thanked USWA and OWA for keen interest in healthy activity and hoped that final will also be joined by university employees with same passion. He also appreciated the efforts of Provost Office officers and staff members for making this event a success. The final will be played between Hostel 4 and 5 on Thursday.

End of year 2021: Despite the pandemic and economic difficulties, 65% Pakistanis report to be happy in general with their life. Pakistan ranks above India in terms of happiness index: Gallup International’s Global Hope, Happiness and Economic Prosperity Index

Islamabad, December 30, 2021 (PPI-OT):According to a Gallup International Survey at the end of the year 2021, despite the pandemic and economic difficulties, 65% Pakistanis report to be happy in general with their life. Pakistan ranks above India in terms of happiness index.

These interesting findings have emerged out of an annual, 44 country research conducted by Gallup International (founded by the world-renowned scholar and pollster Dr. George Gallup in 1947). The survey in Pakistan was done by Gallup Pakistan, Pakistan’s oldest and trusted survey firm, working since 1979.

The study comprised internationally of 41,560 respondents covering different ethnicities, regions, religions, age, and gender. The international press release with report can be accessed here. This study has been conducted every year in Pakistan and globally for the past 44 years and is unique in terms of sample size, coverage, and longitudinal analysis.

Key learnings from survey:

Pakistan’s net happiness is almost equal to the global figure for net happiness.

Slightly less Indians feel happy about their life as compared to Pakistanis.

Proportion of people unhappy with their life much higher in Afghanistan as compared to Pakistan.

65% in Pakistan, well above the regional average of 55%, feel generally happy about their life.

This year saw a slight increase in net happiness from 40% in 2020 to 42% in 2021.

Pakistan ranks 20th in terms of net happiness alongside Czech Republic.

Pakistani American technology executives convene at NIC LUMS 

Lahore, December 30, 2021 (PPI-OT):In a bid to build stronger connections between tech diaspora in the US, and tech talent in Pakistan, Pakistani American and OPEN Seattle tech delegation, visited the National Incubation Center Lahore (NICL) at LUMS. The delegation comprised of technology executives from Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Educative, Leverify, and Data Science Dojo, looking to understand the growing entrepreneurial landscape in the country and pave the way for future collaboration.

The guests were given a tour of NICL facilities including the Makers Lab, a suite of state-of-the-art prototyping workshops; the Facebook Innovation Lab, where virtual and augmented reality solutions come to life; and a co-working space, featuring a plug-and-play set-up. They also exchanged detailed insights with Foundation Council members, and the faculty and team at NICL.

The visit will help promote collaboration and mentorship opportunities for Pakistani start-up founders, as well as technology transfer for scalable impact. The start-ups currently enrolled in the incubation programme had the opportunity to engage with the delegation and garnered interest. These range from enzymes production, AR- enhanced textbooks to enrich learning, a crowdfunding platform, online coding school for children, to gamification of physical fitness.

“It’s heartening to see the rapid growth in Pakistan’s technology space and startup potential” said Moazzam Chaudhry, who heads Product Management at Google Cloud and is the President at OPEN Global. “There is no dearth of talent and potential in Pakistan; I’ve met some start-ups today at NICL, and am impressed with their serious passion and maturity even at the early stage!”

Presenting his vision for NICL, Chairman Saleem Ahmad, stated that, “solving Pakistan’s biggest problems requires extraordinary human capital development. We are committed to doing our part in bridging the skills gaps needed to not only sustain the growth of our nascent start-up ecosystem but also create viable career opportunities for our abundant youth. Equally importantly, we aim to help local industry innovate to enhance industry productivity and global competitiveness”.

The National Incubation Center Lahore is a springboard for venture incubation and corporate innovation through an intersection of applied research, industry and talent, to solve Pakistan’s biggest problems and is supported financially by Ignite and Ministry of Information Technology.

IIUI Supervisory Committee agrees to introduce Quality Food and Campus Life Set-Ups 

Islamabad, December 30, 2021 (PPI-OT):The meeting of the Supervisory committee of International Islamic University (IIU) on canteens, shops and commercial setups was held here at the new campus of the university on Thursday under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. N.B. Jumani, Vice President Administration and Finance (A and F).

The committee, in the light of the vision and directions of worthy IIU President took various decisions to ensure best living and food facilities across the campus that included a revamped, hygienic and controlled price with availability of quality products and services-based set-ups of canteens, barber shops, photostat shops and general stores.

It was agreed in the meeting that tenders after approval of the competent authority shall be floated soon to bring in quality service provider parties that shall be monitored by the committee as per approved indicators. The committee decided that in the first phase set ups of the maximum subsidized price and quality products shall be introduced, while better food and sitting set ups with improved ambiance shall also be ensured on the campus. It was also agreed that in the next stage, international chains and their setups will be introduced at the campus.

On the occasion, Dr. N.B. Jumani appreciated the hard work and dedicated efforts of the committee to introduce quality set ups with subsidized rates for the IIUI campuses. He also directed that the guidelines of the government to discourage the substandard food items must also be followed. The chair hailed that the committee through its monitoring mechanism was already examining such indicators for ensuring a healthy campus.
