Sherry Rehman says it’s the beginning of the end for Imran

Karachi, October 29, 2021 (PPI-OT):Leading the Regal Chowk rally against the growing economic crisis and crippling inflation in the country, Vice President Sherry Rehman said, “PTI government has broken a 70-year record of inflation over the past 3 years. Everyone is out on the roads protesting against this incompetent government and asking for the prime minister to resign. Inflation has reached 9% in Pakistan according to the World Bank which is higher than other South Asian countries in the region and instead of fixing this crisis, the government has also warned of higher inflation. This is exactly why PPP is marching today against crippling inflation, and unaffordable life in Naya Pakistan. It is clear to us that Imran is no longer on one page with the people of Pakistan.”

Waving an electricity bill at the crowd Rehman said, should we burn this bill now like you used to on a container in D Chowk? When the crowd roared burn it, she said “No, we don’t burn bills and put people in more difficulties than they already face in Naya Pakistan. But we want the old electricity rates back that we’re on the bill he burnt in Purana Pakistan.”

“Unemployment rate has reached 16% as of 2021 whereas it was 6% in 2018. This government continues to release dubious lower unemployment rate, but it is quite clear that unemployment has been on a stark rise. In fact, they have been dismissing employees instead of fulfilling their promises of 10 million jobs. On the other hand, poverty rate in Pakistan has been increasing since 2018, when it was 21.9% and has now increased by 7.4% in the 3 years of this government,” she added.

Addressing the inflation in the country, Rehman said, “Inflation has been on an exponential rise since the PTI government came into office; In 2018 inflation was at 5.07% but has sharply increased as it was 9% in September 2021. The inflation rate is at 12.66% year-on-year meanwhile the government is busy blaming others for inaction to mask their own incompetence. Food prices across the board have doubled while other essential food items such as ghee, oil, sugar, flour and poultry have become unaffordable for the masses. In 2020 the food inflation in Pakistan had soared to a whopping 20% which was the highest in the region”.

“The government claims that the fuel prices are so high because of the increase in international oil prices but during PPP’s tenure, when global economies were hit by financial crises, our government decided to give relief to the people and not to the status quo. The oil prices are much lower now ($84/bbl) than they were during PPP’s time ($110/bbl) yet domestic oil prices were affordable,” she added.

Addressing the frequent price hikes by the PTI government, Rehman said, “There is no end to the cruelty displayed by the PTI government as petrol prices go up every 15 days. Petrol prices have increased by 49% while electricity rates have gone up by 57%. Whereas the price of gas has increased by 350% in three years. Industries are being closed due to the ineffective policies of the government”.

“We are on one page with the people and God, while the PM and his government’s one page is torn with everyone, the people of Pakistan, the IMF, his selectors, and now America doesn’t call either,” she added. PPP Parliamentary Leader in the Senate, Senator Sherry Rehman concluded by saying, “PPP will always be standing with the people of Pakistan as we are on the same page with them unlike this government. People are at their wits’ end due to the incompetence of this government. Considering the prevailing situation, its only fair that the PM resigns”. The rally ended with calls of Go Niazi Go and Wazeer e Azam Bilawal.

Rulers should end ego and solve problems through dialogue, don’t be responsible for bloodshed: Ch Parvez Elahi

Lahore, October 29, 2021 (PPI-OT):Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Parvez Elahi has said that the rulers should end their ego and solve the problem through dialogue and not become responsible for bloodshed. The rulers have no choice but to restore peace because the whole issue seems to be their responsibility.

Ch Parvez Elahi said that young policemen were being martyred, people were dying in ambulances due to road blockades, are they any less Muslims than anyone else? Someone should go to the widows and children of the martyrs and ask them how they are.

Chaudhry Parvez Elahi said that when our own Muslims brothers are dying on both sides then who is suffering, the rulers must understand that governments have no ego and there is no choice but peace. The doors of dialogue should not be closed, the solution to the problem will come only through negotiations. If negotiations can take place with the enemy country, why not with the people of one’s own country?

West Indies edge past to oust Bangladesh

Dubai, October 29, 2021 (PPI-OT):The West Indies sealed a tight encounter against Bangladesh, winning by just three runs off the final ball of the game to knock Bangladesh out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

Nicholas Pooran crashed 40 of 22 to rescue West Indies innings having lost the toss and been put into bat, as they posted 142 for seven.

Bangladesh were steady in their reply but needing 13 off the final over, they could only manage 10 as the Windies kept their own qualification hopes alive.

Debutant Roston Chase was into the action early on as opener Evin Lewis was caught easily by Mushfiqur Rahim at square leg.

After being promoted to open, ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle was not all-conquering, instead being clean bowled by Mahedi Hassan having made four off ten.

Shimron Hetmyer then fell in the seventh over and it would be four overs before the West Indies got a boundary, Chase combining with Kieron Pollard to steady the ship.

Pollard then faced choppy waters as Bangladesh went up for a review for LBW but the DRS showed the impact was outside off stump and Pollard was safe, for now.

Two balls later, Pollard was walking off retired hurt, a ball later new batter Andre Russell was back in the dugout, run out without facing as Taskin Ahmed got a toe to Chase’s drive back down the ground.

Russell’s dismissal brought out Pooran who made 40 off 22 to rescue the West Indies to 119-5 and Chase was then undone by Shoriful Islam, who knocked over his leg stump.

Jason Holder survived the hat-trick ball but his partner Dwayne Bravo fell three balls later as Pollard returned to the crease with five balls to go. He and Holder crashed what turned out to be three crucial sixes to push the West Indies to a respectable score.

Captain Pollard was not the only one hurt, with Shakib Al Hasan noticeably hobbling between the wickets as he opened Bangladesh’s chase.

And it was Shakib who was the first batter to go, sending an easy catch to Holder to leave Bangladesh on 21 for one.

Mohammad Naim dragged the ball back onto his stumps off the bowling of Holder as the Tigers ended the powerplay on 29-2, the same as the Windies.

From there, Bangladesh kicked on reaching 60 before the loss of their third wicket, Soumya Sarkar sending the ball into the diving hands of Gayle.

The next wicket followed a similar pattern, Bangladesh adding 30 runs before losing a wicket, this time Rampaul bowling Mushfiqur for eight.

With three overs remaining the Tigers needed 30 from 18 balls with Liton Das crashing a four to swing the game towards Bangladesh as he and Mahmudullah looked to be controlling the chase.

Liton could not stay until the end though, as the long limbs of Holder caught him on the boundary, with six balls to go Bangladesh needed 13 runs.

The West Indies were plagued by fielding errors missing run-out chances, dropping catches and missing balls, but with Bangladesh needing a boundary off the final ball, Russell held his nerve to bowl West Indies to a narrow victory.

Scores in brief

West Indies beat Bangladesh at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah by three runs.

West Indies 142/7 in 20 overs (Nicholas Pooran 40, Roston Chase 39; Shoriful Islam 2/20, Mahedi Hasan 2/27)

Australia looking for win over old enemy England

Dubai, October 29, 2021 (PPI-OT):Two unbeaten sides will meet tomorrow when Australia take on their oldest enemy England, with both sides knowing a win will go a long way to guaranteeing them qualification to the semi-finals.

Australia defeated South Africa and Sri Lanka in their opening games while England beat the West Indies and Bangladesh to start their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 campaign in style.

And with their historic rivalry and the Ashes coming up later this year, Pat Cummins is seeing it as a chance for Australia to get an early advantage.

The fast bowler said: “Most of the team is quite different to the Test side for England, but it’s always huge. We play England a lot. I think the style of play is quite similar, we like to take the game on.

“They’ve been probably just about the form team the last few years in white-ball cricket.

“We know these guys really well. We know it’s such a big game in the context of making the semi-finals, and always enjoy coming up against England.

“There are a few players that will be coming out this summer from this side, so it would be great to get one on the board against them early.”

Australia have utilised Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell in tandem as a fifth bowler but some questioned the tactic after the pair took nought for 51 between them against Sri Lanka.

Replying to those doubts, Cummins said: “We’re covering a lot of areas with that fifth bowler, we’ve got Maxwell, Stoinis, Marsh, all who can contribute those four overs.

“It might change, but at the moment I feel like whichever way we go, we’ve got plenty of options.

“I think another great thing about those first two games is it feels like everyone in the 11 has played a huge role.

“Just about everyone has fired and is riding high on confidence, it feels like it’s all coming together.”

For England captain Eoin Morgan, having had two comfortable victories, he believes Australia will present a real challenge for the 2016 finalists.

“I think it’s probably going to be one of our most difficult games in this group stage, Australia are a very strong side, they’ve gone two for two, very much like us, and they’ve started the tournament well,” Morgan said.

“Australia are a very strong side. Obviously coming into the tournament, they probably would be considered joint second favourites, along with us.

“They’re a side that we know pretty well, we have played against them a lot over two or three years, so we’re looking forward to a really good game.”

England have started strongly in the tournament and have been buoyed by positive performances from both their opening batters – Jason Roy and Jos Buttler – but Morgan believes his side can still thrive even if that duo don’t fire.

He added: “I think early momentum in any game can go a long way to winning a game, but like we witnessed over the last couple of years, if we don’t manage to gain that momentum, I think we have guys that can either wrestle it back or counterpunch.

“I think that’s probably what makes us a difficult side to play against, we always have a hand or a trick to play regardless of the situation that we’re in.”

Jason Holder rallies the West Indies for crucial first win

Dubai, October 29, 2021 (PPI-OT):Having only been drafted in as an injury replacement two days ago, Jason Holder produced a fantastic all-round performance as the West Indies snuck home for a three-run win over Bangladesh.

The former captain came into the squad to replace Obed McCoy who was ruled out of the tournament with a shin injury on his right leg and his services were immediately called upon as he was promoted into the side ahead of Hayden Walsh Jr.

He impressed with bat, ball and in the field as the West Indies kept their hopes alive having lost the toss and been put into bat by Bangladesh who also needed a win to have any chance of making the semi-finals.

Holder came into bat at number nine, with just ten deliveries remaining and was immediately into the thick of it facing a hat-trick ball from Shoriful Islam with the West Indies on 119-6.

Having successfully defended that ball, the 29-year-old saw fellow new batter Dwayne Bravo go four balls later and out walked an injured Kieron Pollard who had previously retired hurt.

With five balls to go, Holder smashed back-to-back sixes off Mustafizur Rahman, with Pollard adding another maximum off the final ball to see the Windies post a respectable total of 142-7 and Holder add runs that would prove crucial.

The Bajan all-rounder was just as important with the ball, conceding just nine off his first two overs as one of the opening bowlers.

In the field he proved useful too, taking the catch of Bangladesh legend Shakib Al Hasan, himself struggling with injury, as the West Indies claimed their first wicket of a see-sawing run chase.

Holder was also a calm head as the Windies looked to keep their nerves in check, with captain Pollard off the field injured and Nicholas Pooran behind the stumps as the stand-in captain.

In Holder’s third over, he took the wicket of opening batter Mohammad Naim, who went for 17 off 19 balls, again going for just three runs from those six deliveries.

In his final spell, he was a little more wayward bowling two wides before Mahmudullah hit his last delivery for four.

Still, he ended with figures of 1-22, the best of any of the Windies’ bowling attack and his best moment was yet to come.

With just seven deliveries left and Liton Das on the charge on 44, Holder stretched his six-foot-seven frame to claw Das’ ball out of the sky.

In doing so, he stopped a certain six, claimed a crucial wicket and, in the end, helped the West Indies to victory. Without that catch, it is hard to see how they would have come out on top.

For the final act of a nail-biting match, Holder was a keen observer watching on as Andre Russell was called upon to defend 13 from the final over.

He did so on the final ball, getting the ball past the outside edge of Mahmudullah to earn a dot ball and deny Bangladesh the boundary they needed.

Thanks to the contributions of Nicholas Pooran, who made 40 off 22 balls, Russell and Holder the West Indies live to fight another day as they look to defend their 2016 crown.

Holder reveals jubilation as West Indies hold their nerve

Dubai, October 29, 2021 (PPI-OT):Jason Holder described his jubilation after Andre Russell’s final-ball yorker sealed the West Indies’ victory over Bangladesh by just three runs.

Bangladesh needed four off the final ball to steal the win, but Russell held his nerve to bowl a dot ball and keep the defending champions’ hopes of retaining the title alive.

For Bangladesh, their qualification hopes are ended with their third defeat in three Super 12 matches as they failed to chase down 143.

“The last ball obviously that Russell bowled, four runs needed from one ball, to bowl a perfect yorker which was a dot ball was phenomenal,” Holder said.

“A lot of jubilation went through my veins especially and then all the guys obviously did really well. It was the best moment for me.”

“The last over [of the West Indies innings] was obviously very important for our momentum.

“We were able to get three sixes which really helped us get up to a respectable total on that wicket, I felt 140 was always a very good total.

“I think with our bowling attack, I would back us to defend that and it proved to be enough and also credit to our batters for getting us up to 140 and then also credit to the way we stuck at it and held our nerve.”

Holder had only been recently drafted into the squad as an injury replacement for Obed McCoy, and immediately came into the matchday side in place of Hayden Walsh.

He hit 15 runs off five balls including two sixes in the final over before producing his side’s best bowling figures of 1-22 as West Indies clung on for the win.

Bangladesh skipper Mahmudullah cited Holder’s catch of Litton Das at full stretch with seven balls remaining as the pivotal moment in the match.

He said: “I think at that point of time we were in the game, we were in a good race against the West Indies, if Litton’s last shot could have been six, I thought it was probably six but that is one advantage when you have six foot five or six foot seven tall fielders in your outfield who can catch.

“I think probably that was one crucial moment of the match and in T20 cricket you have those close calls unfortunately, we came second against them today.

“But I think probably if me or Litton had got into the last over and we were both set it would have been a different story but having said that, I think Russell nailed his yorkers quite well.”

With Bangladesh’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals dashed, they will aim for consolation wins against South Africa and Australia to reward the vociferous crowds who have followed them.

“Definitely we will play for our pride we’ve been trying hard to get a win and two more games to go we will give everything definitely to win,” Mahmudullah added.

“I’m very disappointed because we let them down, they have been supporting throughout all the games, so please keep supporting us and inshallah we’ll try to deliver some wins.”
