Naat, Qirat and Speech Contest begins at GCU

Lahore, October 13, 2021 (PPI-OT): A provincial-level Inter-University Naat, Qirat and Speech Competition on Tuesday began here at the Government College University Lahore in connection with the Shan-e-Rehmatul lil Alameen (SAW) Week. Students from different universities of Punjab are participating in the competition being held under the auspices of the Punjab Higher Education Department.

The competition among students of Lahore Division started on Tuesday. Amima Ashraf from University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore secured the first position in Qirat contest in the female category, while Hafiza Anisa Rafi from Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) Lahore and Hafiza Afifa from University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore secured second and third positions respectively.

Maria Munir from University of Education (UoE) Lahore, Mariam Saddique from the GCU Lahore and Sehrish Khan from LCWU stood first, second and third in the Naat contest among female students. In male category, Hafiz Muhammad Amir from the GCU Lahore adjudicated first in Qirat contest, while Abdullah Yousaf from UoE Lahore and Hafiz Muhammad Shakir from UVAS Lahore won second and third positions respectively.

Hafiz Anees-ur-Rehman from COMSATS University Lahore Campus, Ali Nauman from GCU Lahore and Shabbir Ahmad from UET Lahore stood first, second and third in the Naat contest among male students. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Asghar Zaidi congratulated the winners of the first round, announcing that the grand finale of the provincial-level Inter-University Naat, Qirat and Speech Competition would also be held at the GCU Lahore on Saturday, October 16, 2021.

HEC and UCP co-host the HEC General Sports Trophy 2020-2021 Sports Scholarships and Prize Money Ceremony

Lahore, October 13, 2021 (PPI-OT): The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan held the HEC General Sports Trophy 2020-2021 Sports Scholarships and Prize Money ceremony at the University of Central Punjab. The honourable chief guest of the ceremony was Mr. Shafqat Mahmood, Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training in Pakistan; the Guest of Honour for the event was Ms. Shaista Sohail, Executive Director HEC and Vice Chancellors of various participating and winning Universities. The auspicious guests were welcomed by Mian Amer Mehmood, Chairman Punjab Group, Prof. Sohail Afzal Executive Director Punjab Group and Dr. Nassar Ikram, Pro-rector UCP.

General Trophies were awarded to the first, second, and third place for national-level participation for both men and women. 70+ cash prizes and scholarship cheques were distributed among the National Medals winners who represented the HEC Pakistan University Sports Board. The overall Inter-University Championship Trophies for both Men and Women were also awarded for 2020-21.

The University of Central Punjab emerged as the university with the most winnings and kept its winning streak alive by becoming the HEC General Sports Champions for the tenth time. Mr. Shafqat Mehmood addressing the audience congratulated UCP and Mian Amer Mehmood on the University of Central Punjab’s decade long winning streak of the HEC General Sports Trophy. He also congratulated HEC and appreciated its efforts in bringing sports and education at par with each other.

Speaking to the honourable guests and attendants, Dr. Shaista Sohail, Executive Director HEC, defined Higher Education Commission (HEC), under the banner of the Pakistan University Sports Board (PUSB), act as a nursery to promote sports in Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) of Pakistan. Almost all major games are played regularly in HEI’s. In addition, HEC/PUSB organises 35 men and 25 women intervarsity championships every year throughout Pakistan. These competitions provide social contact, national harmony, build a healthy society, and promote sports culture in HEI’s. HEC is also going to add more sports for women in future.

Dr. Nassar Ikram, Pro-rector UCP, speaking at the occasion, said, “Our aim as universities is to produce graduates who are future leaders, team players, and tolerant individuals, who have other life skill components. And I must admire the efforts of HEC and other policymakers who attach significant importance to sports as a means to nation-building by creating a sense of national pride and unity.”

Mian Amer Mehmood culminated the event with a vote of thanks to the Honourable Federal Minister, Executive Director HEC and sportsmen and women and suggested improvements in education and revive the sports and sportsmanship in Pakistan under the leadership of Mr. Shafqat Mahmood. He further added UCP all feel incredibly proud that HEC selected UCP for this event because of our consistent performance in this field. He congratulated HEC to realise this in true essence by their recent project “Kamyab Jawan Sports Academies” – a programme intended to enhance university sports facilities by building infrastructure and providing coaching.

Denmark, Germany, Italy and Jersey begin road to ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022

Dubai, October 13, 2021 (PPI-OT): The qualification pathway to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Australia will continue this week with Denmark, Germany, Italy and Jersey set to compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier supported by Dream 11 hosted at the Desert Springs Cricket Ground in Spain.

The event will be played from 15 – 21 October as a double round robin format with the teams finishing first and second to progress to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers A and B, which will take place in 2022.

Little separates the teams on the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings with Jersey (24th), Italy (26th), Denmark (30th) and Germany (36th) all within 12 positions of one another.

The previous ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in 2019 went down to the wire of the final match with Jersey narrowly pipping Germany to book their place at the Global Qualifiers.

Jersey joined The Netherlands and Scotland as the two other European Associate Member representatives at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifiers in 2019 and narrowly missed out on a place in the finals, winning three of their six group matches.

In all, there will be 12 matches streamed across the event. The live streaming arrangement between IMG Arena and ICC will be produced by CricClubs, with each match available to view live on FanCode in the Indian sub-continent and on ICC.tv in the rest of the world. Click here to sign up.

Freddie Klokker, Denmark captain said: “It has been nearly two years without any ICC events, so we can’t wait to get the tournament underway and play some very competitive cricket. There is a great opportunity for every team to go through to the next round so we as a team are really looking forward to the challenge ahead. If we are good enough to qualify for the next round, it would be a great opportunity to promote and advertise the great game that we play in Denmark.”

Venkatraman Ganesan, Germany captain said: “We are extremely excited to be a part of this tournament and the opportunity to progress to the Global Qualifiers is a big motivation for the whole squad. Qualifying to the next round will be quite huge for cricket in Germany and I hope it will raise the profile of the sport significantly, opening up new and exciting opportunities to grow the sport in our nation. Good luck to all other participating teams.”

Gareth Berg, Italy captain and coach said: “Cricket Italia are very excited to once again be partaking in an official ICC Men’s T20 World Cup qualifier. We have undergone some changes both in mindset and players with the aim of moving our game forward. So as a cricket nation I am excited by the new challenges this brings us both personally and as head coach and captain. Events like this are a great breeding ground for unearthing some real talent in Associate cricket. It’s a shame we can’t get all our players involved due to covid restrictions but the squad we have picked are hungry for success and want to win games of cricket for Italia.”

Charles (Chuggy) Perchard, Jersey captain said: “After months of hard work, we’re all hugely excited to have the opportunity to be representing our Island in an ICC competition again. As a squad, we’ve got big dreams of qualifying for a World Cup and hopefully this will be the first step in our journey.”

Capital University Signs MoU with READ Foundation

Islamabad, October 13, 2021 (PPI-OT): Rural Education and Development (READ) Foundation is a non-profit educational network, located in North Pakistan and runs around 390 schools across Pakistan including Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. READ Foundation claim that it is working for provision of quality education and consider a prime educational networks in the country now a today.

Around 165 students successfully completed their VIS community service in READ Foundation from November,2016 to October,2021. READ Foundation has been working with VIS-CUST since November 2016 and consider one of pioneer partner organization of VIS-CUST. As record show that first MoU with READ signed in November 2016.

CUST competent authority approved for renew the MoU with READ Foundation in this month. So, a representative of VIS-CUST visited Head office of READ Foundation on Friday October 8, 2021. Mr. M. Shafique Khan, GM Resource Mobilization warmly welcomed representative of VIS-CUST in READ Foundation and appreciated VIS-CUST role in the field of education and voluntarily services. He briefly introduced READ Foundation and its services for community.

READ Foundation requested following points to be care from next semester.

Around 45 students will be registered for READ Foundation per semester, in three groups. Each group consist of 15 students.

VIS-CUST should plans seminars and workshops in collaboration with READ in future.

For strengthen partnership monthly meeting will be organized physically or online.

A meeting will be called before placement of volunteers in READ to discuss on mechanism.

Male and female students will be treated equally for placement.

Finally, MoU renewal ceremony held between VIS-CUST and READ Foundation. Mr. Naeem Ullah Khan, Deputy Director VIS-CUST and Mr. M. Shafique Khan, GM Resource Mobilization signed the renewal of MoU.

REDC and Punjab Irrigation Department Conduct a Series of Capacity Building Programmes

Lahore, October 13, 2021 (PPI-OT): The Rausing Executive Development Centre (REDC) at LUMS developed and executed a series of capacity building programmes in collaboration with the Punjab Irrigation Department (PID) and Project Implementation Unit (PIU).

The programmes are part of the ongoing Disaster and Climate Resilience Improvement Project (DCRIP) being implemented by the Irrigation Department with financial assistance from the World Bank. The Project envisaged a component to provide learning opportunities for the irrigation engineers and management personnel working on various management functions with the PID.

REDC developed customised learning interventions focused on organisational and individual development with three short duration executive programmes on the defined areas for PID officials, spread over six months.

Participants learned to develop a deeper understanding of the various functional areas including stakeholder management, project risk management, cross-functional team leadership, managing diversity for better performance, improved internal communication, conflict management and the principles of procurement.

Qandeel Zahra, Deputy Director Water Informatics, PID, said, “The programme described well the practicality of theoretical knowledge in our daily work life, and the management of day-to-day problems and risks. It was an excellent experience as project management is not a simple mathematical task but an art of handling technical and professional oblique with professional members”

Ali Haider, Executive Engineer, PID, called the programme “very effective in developing the basic knowledge about various aspects of work as well as the processes and their application in the practical and professional field. It is a very good learning exercise for government employees, especially the engineers working on various projects.”

During the closing session, Minister of Irrigation Punjab, Mohsin Leghari said that PID and REDC developed the programmes to foster leadership skills and managerial acumen amongst the programme participants. “The purpose of this collaboration is to develop and enhance the confidence and managerial acumen. We hope that the residential training has served not only as a team-building exercise but also helped groom you in the multi-dimensional aspects of leadership and project management, so that you can all better contribute to the department in the long run.”

This collaboration aimed to help PID expose its officials to relevant customised learning interventions that will help improve the overall organisational performance. These executive development programmes will help the employees grow their knowledge base and improve their interpersonal skills to become more effective for the organisation.
