Rajanpur: In the recent General Elections 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-189 Rajanpur-III secured victory with only 22% support from the registered voters in the constituency. Despite receiving 83,628 votes, which accounted for 43% of the 196,055 ballots cast, the elected representative did not achieve a majority among the total registered voters, who number 376,306.
According to Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN)'s analysis, the final consolidated result from the constituency showed that voter turnout was 52 percent. The election, held under Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, saw the winner secure the seat without majority voter support, as 52% of participating voters cast their ballots for other candidates. The runner-up garnered 37% of the votes, the third-placed candidate received 6%, and the remainder of the votes were distributed among other candidates. Additionally, 5% of the votes were deemed invalid.
FAFEN's analysis highlights the implications of the FPTP system used in Pakistan, which allows candidates to win by securing the highest vote share rather than a majority. The data underscore a discrepancy between voter preferences and electoral outcomes, suggesting that a proportional representation system might better reflect the diversity of voter preferences across the 266 National Assembly constituencies. The documented gap between the votes cast and representation secured in Pakistan's GE-2024 elections illustrates the challenges of achieving electoral representativeness under the current system.
