MNA from NA-192 Secures Win with Only 31% Voter Support

Kashmore: The elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-192 Kashmore-cum-Shikarpur garnered 124,979 votes in the General Elections of 2024, amounting to 57% of the 221,101 ballots cast, but only 31% of the 402,106 registered voters in the constituency. This reflects the workings of Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, where winning requires only the highest vote share, not a majority.

According to Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency showed a voter turnout of 55%. NA-192 was among 70 out of 266 National Assembly constituencies where the winner secured 50% or more of the polled votes. Despite this, a significant portion of voters, 86,980 or 39%, did not vote for the winner. Additionally, the winner's vote share among the total registered voters was only 31%.

The runner-up candidate received 35% of the ballots cast, the third-placed candidate obtained 1%, while the remaining candidates collectively secured 4% of votes cast. A total of 9,142, or 4%, were declared invalid. This analysis by FAFEN is part of a broader examination of electoral representativeness across Pakistan's constituencies, highlighting how the FPTP system often results in elected members who lack majority support. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate legislative seats in alignment with the vote shares won, allowing a wider spectrum of voter preferences to be represented. The GE-2024 data from Pakistan illustrates the disparity between votes cast and representation secured across all 266 National Assembly constituencies.
