Jhal Magsi Voter Registration Lags Behind National Rate, Gender Gap Highlighted

Jhal Magsi: Voter registration in the Jhal Magsi district has reached only 35% of its estimated 2025 population, falling significantly short of the national average of 54%. This discrepancy highlights a pronounced gender gap in voter registration, with women being particularly underrepresented.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, the data, drawn from electoral roll statistics released by the Election Commission of Pakistan, reveals that Jhal Magsi has 78,208 registered voters. Among them, 43,033 are male, accounting for 55.0%, and 35,175 are female, making up 45.0%. The district ranks 127th by population size in the country and 119th nationally in voter registration rates, placing it 21st out of 34 districts in Balochistan.

One of the key reasons for the low registration rate is the significant gender gap. Female voter registration stands at 32% of the estimated female population, compared to 37% for males. This gap is not attributed to census discrepancies seen in larger cities but rather to genuine non-registration. Challenges such as restricted mobility, lower female CNIC penetration, and social constraints on civic participation have been identified as primary barriers.

Efforts to address this issue are underway, with the introduction of mobile NADRA units and sustained outreach by the Election Commission of Pakistan through community networks. These initiatives aim to close the registration gap before the next general elections.
