ISLAMABAD: Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, Secretary General of the Pakistan Peoples Party, has dismissed allegations that his party opposed the allocation of Gilgit Baltistan's share in the National Finance Commission (NFC) award, labeling such claims as unfounded.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Bukhari emphasized the party's long-standing commitment to provincial autonomy, highlighting its role in securing a constitutional amendment to Article 60 concerning the NFC. Bukhari noted that the Constitution's Article 1 already delineates the territories of Pakistan, with the NFC framework allocating 56% of resources to provinces and 44% to the federation.
Bukhari further criticized the Chief Minister of Gilgit Baltistan for allegedly spreading misinformation and misunderstanding constitutional provisions. He urged Gilgit Baltistan's leadership to advocate for a constitutional amendment to formally integrate the region into the NFC mechanism.
He also called on the federal government to allocate additional funds to both Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Kashmir from its portion of the resources.
Bukhari urged the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz to ensure justice for Gilgit Baltistan, calling on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take action. He reiterated the PPP's stance that equitable sharing of power and resources is essential, as decentralization fortifies the federation.
