WASA’s Financial Mismanagement Under Fire as Employees Go Unpaid for 18 Months

Karachi: A prominent political leader has raised serious concerns over the financial management and public safety oversight of the Water Supply and Sewerage Corporation (WASA). Despite the agency's substantial revenue generation, employees have not been paid for 18 months, while public funds are allegedly being used for luxury expenditures by officials.

According to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Pakistan, Dr. Sahibzada Abul Khair Muhammad Zubair, Chairman of Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP) and the Milli Yakjehti Council Pakistan, criticized the organization for its failure to compensate its workforce, highlighting the financial distress faced by thousands of employees. Dr. Zubair accused WASA's senior officials of spending millions on luxury vehicles and other unnecessary privileges, calling this a glaring example of mismanagement. He noted the stark contrast between the financial hardships of the employees and the lavish lifestyles of the bureaucracy, questioning the performance of the Government of Sindh and relevant authorities.

Dr. Zubair also highlighted the public safety risks posed by open manholes in areas like Hirabad, which remain uncovered despite repeated warnings. The start of the monsoon season exacerbates these risks, as incomplete drainage system maintenance endangers public lives. He called for immediate government intervention to release outstanding salaries, investigate the alleged financial irregularities, and address the city's infrastructure issues to safeguard residents.
