UVAS Observes World Egg Day, Highlights Nutritional Importance and Aims to Curb Malnutrition

Lahore, 13 Oct 2023: The Department of Poultry Production at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore, in alliance with Roomi Poultry and Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA), commemorated ‘World Egg Day’ at Ravi Campus Pattoki on Friday, engaging participants in an assortment of activities under the theme “Eggs For A Healthy Future,” according to a press release by UVAS. The initiative aimed to enlighten the public on the nutritional virtues of eggs and their critical role in human bodily development through a series of activities, while similar programs were held at other UVAS campuses.

Numerous activities punctuated the day, encompassing a seminar, a walk, an informative video about egg nutrition, a singing performance by students from a special education school, and egg eating and dishes cooking competitions, all fashioned to cultivate awareness regarding the nutritional value and significance of eggs in human growth. The events witnessed participation from various public and private sector institutions, faculty members, students, and poultry professionals/representatives.

Ch Muhammad Nusrat Tahir, Chairman Pakistan Poultry Association North Zone, presiding over the seminar, disclosed that PPA intends to rejuvenate the school meal program, addressing malnutrition issues in growing students by providing an egg and drumstick in their classrooms regularly. Tahir emphasized that egg consumption is pivotal in eradicating malnutrition issues within the country.

Meanwhile, UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Nasim Ahmad underscored the need for students to utilize social media effectively to dispel misconceptions related to poultry meat and eggs, such as the use of hormones and steroids in poultry feed. Prof Dr. Nasim extolled eggs as a unique and affordable protein source, fundamental for human body growth, and stressed the urgent requirement to boost egg production to fortify Pakistan’s poultry sector. He also expressed commendations for organizing a successful event highlighting the egg’s importance.

During the inaugural ceremony, Prof Dr. Saima elaborated on the nutritional importance of eggs. Dr. Shahid Mehmood seized the opportunity to elevate awareness about the benefits of eggs and their crucial role in daily life, also presenting the vote of thanks.

A walk, led by Prof Dr. Nasim Ahmad, alongside other dignitaries and students, began from the Information Technology Center A Block and concluded at the Akram Complex. The day concluded with Prof Dr. Nasim, Dr. Saima, Tahir Jatthol, and Dr. Shahid Mehmood distributing cash prizes to winners of all competitions.
