Tilak Varma Emphasizes Adaptability Amid India’s T20I Series Against South Africa

NEW CHANDIGARH: In the lead-up to India’s third T20 International against South Africa, middle-order batter Tilak Varma has highlighted the significance of adaptability within the team’s batting strategy. This comes after India’s decision to send all-rounder Axar Patel to bat at number three was scrutinized following their loss in the second T20I.

Varma, who scored a commendable 62 in the match, addressed questions about India’s batting approach, emphasizing the need for situational awareness and clarity. “Everyone is flexible, except openers. I’m up for batting at 3, 4, 5, or 6, wherever I get a chance,” said Varma, stressing the team’s readiness to adjust batting positions based on the game’s requirements.

The 23-year-old has a track record of success at number three and four, having scored two centuries against South Africa last year from the number three position. Varma’s adaptability was also on display during the Asia Cup 2025, where he scored 213 runs, including a crucial 69* in the final against Pakistan.

Varma defended the decision to promote Axar Patel, citing his impactful performances in previous key matches, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final. “Axar Patel has already done the same thing in the World Cup. And he has done well in that position as well,” Varma noted.

He further emphasized the importance of a strong mentality and sticking to the basics, stating, “If you’re mentally strong, you’ll be successful everywhere.”

India now heads to Dharamshala for the third match of their series against South Africa on December 14, with the series currently tied at one win apiece.
