UCP 1st International Conference on Clinical Legal Education in Pakistan

Lahore, June 01, 2022 (PPI-OT):Faculty of Law, University of Central Punjab, Lahore organized International Conference on “Clinical Legal Education (CLE) in Pakistan” on 23rd and 24th May 2022. The conference was organized in collaboration with Babseacle, Australia and Thailand. On the first day, Bruce Lasky and Wendy Morish commenced a pre-conference interactive session on CLE. Dr Nassar Ikram (Pro-Rector, UCP) opened the formal proceedings with a welcome note.

The keynote speakers for the conference included Professor Dr Hadia Awan (Dean Faculty of Law, UCP), Dr Ali Qazilbash (Ex-chair Department of Law and Policy, LUMS), Dr Ainul Jaria Maidin (International Islamic University, Malaysia), Mr Bruce Laski, (Babseacle) Olanike Sekinat Adelekum (American University of Nigeria, Yola, Nigeria) and Saru Arifin (Faculty of Law, Universitas Negeri Samarang, Indonesia). In addition, clinicians from the USA, Poland, Indonesia, and Pakistan presented their Research Papers on diverse aspects of CLE.

The Conference was conducted in hybrid mode using Zoom Meetings and the UCP conference room. The participants urged a dire need for CLE in Pakistan in line with the global trend. The participants shared their local cultures and cuisine via Zoom in the pre-conference session captioned “Fostering Togetherness” on the second day. In recognition of the participation made by delegates, national anthems of the USA, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Poland were played. The Dean thanked all the keynote speakers, presenters, and attendees for their enthusiastic participation in the Two-Days Conference.

Pursuing World University Ranking, QEC conducts internationalization and Continuous Quality Improvement workshop

Lahore, May 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):The vision to become an internationally acclaimed university in Teaching and Learning is what UCP is striving for. This is reflected in one of the University’s Strategic Pillar ‘to become a Globalized University’ as well. In order to strengthen to faculty wise Internationalization efforts and also discuss methodology of QS Ranking, Times Higher Education Ranking as well as the UI Green Metric Ranking, the Quality Enhancement Cell organized a workshop which was attended by all Deans, HODs and focal persons who are making faculty wise strategic plans.

Director QEC, Ms Mehr Jabeen Agha conducted the workshop, which ended with an interactive Q/A session and sharing of best practices to strengthen the Continuous Quality Improvement mechanism across UCP. Ms Javaria Qais, Director Sustainability Office, also gave an overview of ways to strengthen university wide efforts towards UN-Sustainable Development Goals.

Congresswomen Ilhan Omar visits UCP

Lahore, May 23, 2022 (PPI-OT):Congresswoman Ilhan Omar joined journalist Kamran Shahid in conversation at the University of Central Punjab. Rep. Ilhan Omar is an American politician serving as the US representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district. As the first African refugee to become a Member of Congress, the first woman of colour to represent Minnesota and one of the first two Muslim – American women elected to Congress, Rep. Ilhan Omar’s talk was beneficial for students, especially the large and ambitious female student population at UCP.

The contents of the talk were centred around topics of diversity, inclusion and Rep. Ilhan Omar’s own experience as well as about her efforts on the Higher Education and Career Readiness Policy and Finance Committee and the climate crisis.

Dr. Aatif Amin from Faculty of Life Sciences, Secured Research grant of Rs. 1.4 M from National Institute of Health

Lahore, May 17, 2022 (PPI-OT):Dr. Aatif Amin, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences has been awarded Rs. 1.4 million as a Principal Investigator for a project entitled “Exploring the determinants of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in parents of children and adolescents in Pakistan; A multicenter study” under Health Research Institute (HRI), National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad. This research award is a special recognition of the outstanding project proposal and is the first instance of UCP winning a grant under HRI, NIH. The project is focused on determining the COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among parents of children and adolescents as well as to assess the factors responsible for hesitancy with relation to different vaccine types.

International Conference on Substance Use Disorders 2022 

Lahore, May 13, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, UCP, in collaboration with the phoenix foundation of research and development, organized an international conference on substance use disorders (ICSUD-2022) on 30th and 31st March 2022 at Auditorium, University of Central Punjab.

ICSUD-2022 had the privilege to bring together policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and consumers from diverse disciplines all over the country and internationally.

The conference’s main objective was to bring together eminent researchers, drug specialists, social workers, and scholars from all over the world to highlight current challenges and facts regarding addiction. The focus was on understanding the dynamics of addiction in everyday life, addiction rehabilitation, bio-psychosocial and economic imperatives, patterns of drug-related behaviours, steps and approaches to addressing blocks, and reciprocal impact on society.

The two-day conference was inaugurated by Patron-in-Chief, Dr. Nassar Ikram, Pro-Rector, UCP, followed by opening remarks on substance use disorder by Dr. Noor-ul-Zaman Rafiq, Chief Executive Officer Phoenix Foundation for Research and Development. The Key Note speaker Dr. Kamran Niaz Epidemiologist Research Branch UNODC head Quarter Viana, highlighted the World and national prevalence of drug use.

The Key Note Speaker, Dr. Prapapun, Chucharoen, joined virtually from Mahidol University Thailand to discuss the role of a Psychiatrist in Substance use disorders. Moreover, Brigadier Rashid Minhas, Director of Antinarcotics Force Punjab, and Mr. Rajwal Khan, Senior Program Advisor at UNAIDS, addressed the social risk factors, statistics, and strategic plans for the prevention of substance abuse. Day 1 was concluded with a panel discussion with eminently experienced experts/panellists Dr. Iqbal Naeem, Dr. Uzma Ali, Dr. Usman Amin Hotiana, Mr. Muhammad Ayub, and moderator Dr. Shaiza Hasan shared their experiences, highlights factors, strategies, academic and training courses for professionals, recommendations for general public and prevention for youth followed by a question-answer session.

On day two, The Key Note Speaker Dr. Iqbal Naeem Consultant Psychiatrist, National Health Service UK Hon Senior Lecturer University of Manchester enlightened on the Psychological Impact of hidden Pandemic: screen and |Games Addiction, Guest speaker Dr. Salman Shahzad Associate Professor Institute of Clinical Psychology the University of Karachi addressed the Substance abuse in adolescence: its risk, consequences, and mitigation through the lens of prevention experts, The international Key Note Speaker Mr. Bian How Tay Asia Metropolitan University and Guest Speaker Dr. Cindy Biding Online President of the Organization for Addiction (OAPTAR), Malaysia joined virtually. This was followed by Two Scientific Sessions I and II conducted to increase the academic and research input of the young researchers in the field.

SIC Closing Ceremony 

Lahore, April 27, 2022 (PPI-OT):UCP-Centre for Professional Excellence has organized closing ceremony of Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) on April 1, 2022. It was a great collaboration between Faculty of Management Studies, UCP and Samsung, Pakistan to provide fully funded certified training on Artificial Intelligence to upskill the students of University of Central Punjab. On the closing ceremony of SIC, Mr. Amir Sulaiman (Director Finance and General Affairs, Samsung) and Ms. Zenobia Younas (CSR Manager, Samsung) graced the event. Mr. Ayub Ghauri (Executive Director, Netsol and Founder of Hospital) and Ms. Aroosa Sajid (PR and Communications Executive, Netsol) joined the event as the guest of honour from IT industry.

Indeed, it is a proud moment that Ms. Ambreen Khursheed (Senior Lecturer, FOMS) successfully won the Samsung’s CSR Project and initiated the Samsung Innovation Campus at three universities (UCP, CUST and MAJU). Dr. Faisal Mustafa (Dean, FMS) in collaboration with CUST and MAJU executed this training. From UCP, Dr. Ahmad Shabbir Kazmi (Dean, FOIT) along with SIC trainers, facilitators, and coordinators from Faculty of Information Technology (FOIT) played the crucial role in making the SIC training a successful training.

This training course was designed to equip students with hands on experience on Artificial Intelligence skills for increasing their employment opportunities. UCP-Centre for Professional Excellence feels immense pleasure for such mutual collaboration between industry and academia, essential to fully capitalize the skills of university students, especially to increase their employment opportunities. Executive Director Netsol Technologies, Director Finance and General Affairs Samsung, Head CPE, Provost, Deans, Directors and faculty members attended the closing ceremony.
