Lahore, The Institute of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering at the University of the Punjab hosted an insightful seminar on “Artificial Intelligence in Marine Robotics” on Thursday, December 14, 2023. The event featured Prof. Dr. Francesco Maurelli, a renowned expert in Marine Systems and Robotics, as the main guest speaker.
According to University of the Punjab, Prof. Dr. Maurelli, who is affiliated with Constructor University in Bremen, Germany, and a former Marie Curie Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, shared his expertise on the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in marine robotics. He emphasized the development of algorithms that utilize low-cost sensors for environmental estimation and approximation. Highlighting the advancements in sensor technology, he also pointed out the challenges related to the cost and operational requirements of high-performance sensors in marine vehicles.
The seminar also featured presentations by Dr. Maurelli’s Ph.D. scholars, Mr. Waqar Mughal and Mr. Hamza, who discussed their research on autonomous navigation in underwater robots. Their work focuses on leveraging deep learning models for enhancing simultaneous localization, mapping, and underwater communication in these robots.
The event was concluded by Prof. Dr. Kamran Abid, who highlighted the potential for collaborative research and innovation between Punjab University and Constructor University. He encouraged students to develop innovative ideas for future collaborative research endeavors, emphasizing the importance of such international academic exchanges.
The seminar, attended by faculty members and students from various disciplines, primarily from the host institute and the Department of Mathematics, served as a platform for sharing cutting-edge research and fostering academic collaboration in the field of marine robotics and artificial intelligence.
