Punjab University Initiates ‘Free Books’ Project to Foster Reading Culture

Lahore, Punjab University (PU) has launched a new initiative aimed at promoting the habit of reading among its students and the broader community. Titled “Free Books: Donated by the Readers for the Readers”, the project encourages individuals to donate books to support academic knowledge, personal growth, and the overall development of readers.

According to a news release by Punjab University, the project was inaugurated by PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood. In his address, Dr Mahmood emphasized the significance of book reading for mental growth and the enhancement of academic knowledge. Drawing a parallel with global communities, he highlighted that the idea of street libraries has been prevalent and beneficial for many societies abroad. While acknowledging that the local community might not be entirely familiar with the structure and benefits of such initiatives, he expressed optimism that it will soon become a widespread practice.

In a bid to set a positive precedent and demonstrate his commitment to the cause, Dr. Mahmood made a personal donation of books during the ceremony. He passionately appealed to the students, urging them to participate actively in the project by contributing books that could be useful to other students in need. Highlighting the economical aspect, he mentioned that such practices allow a larger group to benefit without significant financial expenditures.

On the occasion, Dr Muhammad Haroon Usmani, PU’s Chief Librarian, conveyed his gratitude to Dr Mahmood for his unwavering support. He credited Dr Mahmood’s backing as instrumental in fostering and promoting constructive activities among the Punjab University’s student body.
