Islamabad, The Public Interest Law Association of Pakistan (PILAP), a leading non-profit and apolitical legal organization, is dedicated to advancing the fundamental rights of Pakistanis. Established in 2011 under the Societies Act 1860, PILAP focuses on enabling citizens to realize their civil, human, economic, social, and political rights through judicial means.
According to the Aman Foundation, PILAP operates with the vision of creating a Pakistan where fundamental rights are enjoyed by all. The organization executes its mission through research, advocacy, and litigation. Funded by member fees and donations, PILAP works towards enhancing government transparency and accountability, and providing effective judicial protection to the civil society of Pakistan.
PILAP’s key achievements include:
1. Addressing the discharge of untreated sewage into River Ravi. The Lahore High Court ordered the commission to oversee progress and set up Bioremediation plants.
2. Focused on reducing the number of Out-Of-School Children and improving enrollment, with the support of UNICEF and the Government of Sindh.
3. Challenging Sindh’s provincial amendments to ensure the independence and autonomy of the police force.
4. Gained a stay order from the Sindh High Court against the construction of a high-rise building at a heritage site in Karachi.
5. Issued a show cause notice to the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad/Capital Development Authority to provide protective equipment for workers.
6. Ensured transparency in census processes and validation through engagement with the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
In addition to litigation, PILAP actively files numerous Right to Information (RTI) requests annually, focusing on issues of public interest. These RTIs often emerge from partnerships with NGOs or are based on current affairs, like urban flooding and public land encroachment.
PILAP’s growing visibility, especially on social media, highlights its commitment to addressing prominent public interest cases and fostering an environment where citizens’ rights are protected and government actions are transparent and accountable.
