Pro Chancellor Raja Yassir Humayun Sarfraz presided over the 16th session of the Senate of the IUB 

Bahawalpur, December 03, 2021 (PPI-OT):Provincial Minister for Higher Education Punjab, Pro Chancellor Raja Yassir Humayun Sarfraz presided over the 16th session of the Senate of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Vice Chancellor Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob, Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Naveed Akhtar, Senior Faculty Members, Deans, Secretary Registrar Prof. Dr. Moazzam Jamil, Controller Examinations, Treasurer, Professors, Heads of Academic Department were present on the occasion. The meeting approved 4 ongoing and development budgets of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur for the year 2016-2020.

In addition, the election of senate members, changes in pension laws, administrative rules, approval of senate members for the Financial Planning Committee, inclusion of female faculty members in the senate, establishment of new faculty and departments, appointment of faculty deans and public-private partnerships. Matters such as development projects under the scheme were approved. Addressing the students during his visit, the provincial minister said that the Punjab government was paying special attention to the field of higher education.

New universities are being set up in Layyah, Taunsa Sharif and Rajanpur in South Punjab. Ghazi University Dera Ghazi Khan which was a small university has been expanded and turned into a big university. He said that the speed with which Vice Chancellor the Islamia University of Bahawalpur Engr. Prof. Dr. Athar Mahboob has transformed this university into one of the best and largest universities in Pakistan is commendable. Development projects worth Rs. 10 billion will be instrumental in making this historic University of South Punjab an international university.

The Government of Punjab is providing full support and assistance for the development of all the universities including the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. He told the students that he has taken a very kind step by activating more than 29 newly formed student societies in the university. I was also happy to see sports activities in the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. The Punjab government is soon re-launching the sports league and in future students from all the universities will participate in these leagues. The provincial minister inaugurated the amphitheater during his visit.

The amphitheater has a seating capacity of more than 2000 students in which extracurricular and extracurricular activities can continue. Classrooms and grand parking have been built along with the amphitheater. The provincial minister also inaugurated the Al-Sadiq Computing Center. The Punjab Government’s E Rozgar Markaz and Plan 9 laboratories have been set up in this camping center. The project has so far trained hundreds of students in freelancing and IT training to create software and provide services to domestic and foreign companies, earning the country valuable foreign exchange.

The provincial minister also inaugurated a successful youth center set up with the help of Higher Education Commission. The center is being set up in different universities as per the vision of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, where students will be provided information on jobs, internships and scholarships. He also laid the foundation stone of the projects. This is the first project of its kind in the country’s universities and the government of Pakistan is also encouraging public-private partnership projects. He also inaugurated the expansion and renovation of the residential colony mosque.

The provincial minister also inaugurated the newly established nursing college. He was informed that this is the first nursing college of its kind in the country’s universities where a 4-year nursing degree will be awarded. He also visited the data center where digital data of all the employees and students of the university is stored digitally. Initiate programs that enhance the development of the area. He was informed that new campuses of the university were being set up at Ahmadpur East and Liaquatpur to provide higher education opportunities to the youth at their doorstep.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal said that the university has introduced 4 seeds in the market and has achieved the status of fourth university where cotton seeds are being cultivated on 45% area of Punjab. Cotton is being cultivated to protect the local geographical environment, low water, leaf rot virus and white fly so that the Islamia University of Bahawalpur can play its role in revival of agricultural economy. Briefing the university about the partnership in the agricultural sector, he said that billions of rupees spent on import of edible oil could be saved through intercropping technology and this project was also an important step towards food security.

He was also briefed on the resettlement of 600,000 acres of Cholistan area by artificial rain in collaboration with a Dubai firm. The project has the potential to change the agricultural, social and economic situation of the region. Director Information Technology Rizwan Majeed gave a briefing on software developed for university management which is very important in decision making. The provincial minister said that the achievements of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur in the field of information technology are a valuable example from other universities.

He said that he would work with the IT team of the university on major projects at the provincial level and in this regard the IT team of the university would be invited to Lahore. Apart from this, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur is an ideal place for Information Technology Park in Bahawalpur. During his visit, the provincial minister planted a tree in the Vice Chancellor’s office and inaugurated the Grandmother’s Exhibition. He also inaugurated a souvenir shop set up by Public Relations Department at Abbasia Campus and appreciated the Cholistani products manufactured by the College of Art and Design. Cholistani Food Festival was also organized on this occasion.

This food festival will be organized in the next Cholistani Jeep Rally in collaboration with the provincial government. The provincial minister also attended the signing ceremony of an agreement with a private institution to finance students on behalf of the Directorate of Fundraising and University Advances. He also participated in a sports gala organized by the Physics Institute.
