PPP Denounces Secondary Wheat Imports Amid Surplus Production

Islamabad, The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has vehemently criticized the government’s decision to import wheat despite a surplus domestic production, claiming that such actions have led to significant financial losses for the national treasury and caused distress among local farmers.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Secretary General of the People’s Party Parliamentarians, Syed Nayar Hussain Bukhari, expressed deep concern over the import policies, terming them as “secondary anti-nationalism.” He highlighted the paradox of farmers protesting in the streets due to the government’s failure to support local agriculture adequately, despite the country experiencing bumper wheat crops. Bukhari called for the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to investigate and publicly disclose the rationale behind the import decision, demanding accountability for the financial losses incurred.

Bukhari stressed the necessity of providing relief to farmers rather than adding to their hardships and emphasized the importance of fostering a conducive environment for next year’s wheat production to prevent future agricultural disappointments.

Furthermore, Bukhari remarked on the broader political context, asserting that only true democratic leadership could steer the country out of its current crises. He reaffirmed the PPP’s commitment to legislation and constitutional reforms that prioritize national and public interests, distancing the party from policies tailored to benefit individual political figures.
