Lahore: Pakistan’s bowling coach, Ashley Noffke, has expressed confidence in the resurgence of the national team’s pace spearhead, Shaheen Afridi, ahead of a bustling cricket calendar. Afridi, who has been recovering from a back issue that affected his performance in 2023, is reportedly regaining his pace and confidence as the Asia Cup approaches.
Noffke observed that Afridi is on an upward trajectory, noting that the 25-year-old bowler showed promising signs during the recent white-ball series against the West Indies. Afridi, who was omitted from Pakistan’s T20I series in Bangladesh, is now progressively hitting the 140km/h mark and aiming to return to his peak form.
“In terms of pace, he is aware it has dropped and he has experienced a dip in form,” Noffke stated regarding Afridi’s recent struggles. However, he emphasized the importance of technique, mindset, and a good release point in Afridi’s recovery process.
The tri-series involving Pakistan, UAE, and Afghanistan will serve as a crucial platform for Afridi to test his skills before the Asia Cup, which starts on September 9. Noffke highlighted Afridi’s ongoing efforts to enhance his swing bowling, a skill that could prove vital during international competitions.
Noffke acknowledged the impact of environmental conditions on swing bowling but stressed the importance of Afridi’s ability to consistently challenge the stumps. The left-arm pacer is also expected to play a significant role in Pakistan’s campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next year.
By focusing on regaining his pace and refining his swing capabilities, Afridi is poised to return as a formidable force on the international cricket stage.
