KARACHI: The Pakistani government’s refusal to sign an amicus brief in support of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s release is being condemned as a moral failing, according to Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, a leader of the Aafia Movement and a noted neurophysician. Dr. Fowzia expressed her dismay over what she perceives as a lack of action and responsibility from the government in a statement released on Wednesday.
Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui emphasized that the refusal to endorse a simple legal document, which could aid in her sister’s legal battle, represents a national disgrace. She criticized the government for its silence and inaction despite a recent order from the Islamabad High Court calling for clarity and warning of potential contempt charges.
Dr. Fowzia argued that the government’s reluctance to support a Pakistani citizen in distress sends a troubling message about the value of its people and questioned whether political convenience is being prioritized over justice. She underscored that this issue transcends legal technicalities, touching on fundamental principles of integrity and national values.
Recalling past actions, Dr. Fowzia pointed out the irony of previous symbolic gestures, such as labeling Aafia as the “Daughter of the Nation,” passing parliamentary resolutions, and sending delegations, only to fall silent when decisive action was possible.
She urged government officials to either take action or refrain from obstructing those attempting to help. Highlighting the importance of maintaining national credibility, Dr. Fowzia pledged to continue her fight for her sister’s dignity and called on those in power to act by signing the brief and responding to the court’s order.
