Pakistan Red Crescent participated in tsunami risk mitigation drill 

Karachi, October 14, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Pakistan Red Crescent (PRC) Sindh Branch has participated in a stakeholder’s workshop and a drill on mitigation tsunami risk, organized by Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) in partnership with UNDP, NDMA, PDMA Sindh and PRC-Sindh on October 14, 2021. The event was organized under the framework of the project “Strengthen Tsunami and Earthquake Preparedness in Coastal Areas of Pakistan”.

Kanwar Waseem, Provincial Secretary, PRC-Sindh, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. He concluded the group work done by the participants. In his remarks at the event, he stated that tsunamis affect communities in many ways and in order to minimise the loss of life and property/infrastructure, these types of projects and drills with coastal communities should be organised to prepare them for disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. Additionally, he stated that communities may reduce the danger of these disasters through proper awareness, community warning systems, and village-level evacuation capabilities.

The PRC-Sindh Provincial Secretary stressed that the coming years would be the era of urban disasters so the concerned organizations in Pakistan should enhance their capabilities to deal with these major emergencies. Director-General Pakistan Metrological Department Muhammad Riaz presented a shield to Provincial Secretary, PRC-Sindh Kanwar Waseem. Later, shields and certificates were also distributed to the participants and facilitators.
