NA-255 Election Reveals Disparity in Voter Support for MNA

Sohbatpur: The elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-255 secured victory in Pakistan's General Election 2024 with only 9% support from registered voters, highlighting a significant gap in voter representation. The MNA amassed 45,404 votes, which translated to 23% of the 199,178 ballots cast, but just 9% of the 532,537 registered voters in the constituency. This outcome underscores the characteristics of Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, where the candidate with the highest vote total wins a seat without needing a majority.

According to the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) for NA-255 reported a voter turnout of 37% on February 8, 2024. Despite the MNA's victory, 137,300 voters, or 69%, chose other candidates, indicating a lack of majority support among those who cast their votes. The runner-up in the constituency obtained 20% of the ballots cast, while the third-placed candidate received 12%. Other candidates collectively garnered 37% of the votes, and 16,474 ballots, accounting for 8%, were declared invalid.

This analysis forms part of FAFEN's broader examination of electoral representativeness in Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The data highlight how the FPTP system often results in elected members lacking majority support. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate legislative seats in line with the vote shares secured by parties or candidates, thus better reflecting voter preferences within elected bodies. The 2024 election data across all constituencies reveal the disparity between votes cast and representation achieved, emphasizing the need for potential electoral reforms.
