Naushahro Feroze: In the recent General Elections of 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-206 Naushahro Feroze-II managed to secure 135,864 votes, representing 59 percent of the 231,746 ballots cast. However, this figure accounts for only 29 percent of the 465,846 registered voters in the constituency. Under Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, a candidate is required only to have the highest vote total to win, not to achieve a majority.
According to Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), the final consolidated result (Form-49) of the constituency indicated a voter turnout of 50 percent. NA-206 was among 70 out of 266 National Assembly constituencies where the winner secured 50 percent or more of the polled votes. Despite this, 87,244 voters, or 38 percent, did not vote for the winning candidate. Furthermore, the winner's share among the total registered voters remained at 29 percent.
The runner-up candidate received 33 percent of the ballots cast, the third-placed candidate acquired 1 percent, while other candidates collectively garnered 3 percent of the votes. A total of 8,638 ballots, or 4 percent, were declared invalid.
This analysis is part of FAFEN's comprehensive evaluation of electoral representativeness across Pakistan's National Assembly constituencies. The FPTP system results in elected members who may not have majority support within their constituencies. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate legislative seats in accordance with the vote shares, ensuring a wider range of voter preferences is mirrored in elected bodies. The data from Pakistan's GE-2024 elections highlight the disparity between votes cast and the representation secured across all 266 National Assembly constituencies.
