“MantoMera Dost” Highlights Day 19 of Awami Theater Festival

Karachi: Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi’s 21-day “Awami Theater Festival” continues to captivate audiences, with the 19th day featuring the play “MantoMera Dost,” which added a special touch to the festival. Written by Anwar Jafri and directed by Sheema Kermani, the play’s cast included Imran Khan, Tabitha, Shazia Adnan, Haris Khan, Shazia, and Naeem Khan. The play revolves around renowned writer Saadat Hasan Manto, as narrated by his close friend Ismat Chughtai. The story is based on Chughtai’s memories and reflections, penned after Manto’s death.

According to Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, every word in the performance was authentically drawn from the writings of Manto and Chughtai, portraying their relationship, camaraderie, arguments, and shared experiences, including their courtroom battles. The partition of the subcontinent was also a significant theme. The play delves into the issue of how literature is categorized, or resisted, in the name of religion—a subject that deeply troubled Manto. It opened with Ismat Chughtai documenting her memories and concluded poignantly with Manto’s death.

This compelling drama has previously been performed in cities across Pakistan, India, and the United States, receiving widespread acclaim. While the story centers on two serious literary figures, it also contained moments of humor, making it a balanced theatrical experience. Sheema Kermani portrayed Ismat Chughtai, delivering a powerful performance. The play raised important questions about the misuse of religion to divide and spread hate, as well as its manipulation for personal agendas. The audience praised the play’s impactful story and the cast’s exceptional performances, applauding enthusiastically and recognizing their talent.
